“I wouldn’t ask you to give up your dreams.” We haven’t even had a date, and we’re already talking about serious topics.
“I know that. I also know that you wouldn’t, but I want to be sure you’re up for it. I’m serious about you deserving a man that will give you undivided attention. I want to give you that.” I melt at his words, my heart fluttering.
“It’s a good thing I also have two jobs. I know the sacrifice it takes, Canaan, and I think it’s amazing that you volunteer for our town while having a demanding job. It’s admirable.” I smile though he can’t see me.
“I really want to kiss you,” his words come out gruff.
“We’ll see if you get a kiss on our first date,” I tease.
“I’ll be the perfect gentleman.”
“Too bad I already know about your dirty mind. You can’t fool me,” I laugh.
“A gentleman when it counts and…” he trails off.
“Yeah, an alpha all other times?” I question.
A deep and husky groan sounds through the phone. My eyes widen briefly at the sexy sound.
“Call it what you want, but when it comes down to it, I’ll make sure you’re satisfied with pleasure. I’ll always respect you, though. Hold doors, open the car door, pull out your chair. I was raised that way, but I’m a man who wants you. What happens between us behind closed doors will stay between us. I promise you that.”
My breath hitches, the ideas of everything we could do floating to the forefront of my mind. I’ve never had a guy talk to me this way, so honest and open. Canaan isn’t playing a cat and mouse game.
“And you’ll never have to worry about conditions,” he adds softly.
“I know,” I whisper.
“Dinner Sunday night. If you want to go somewhere out of Mason Creek, so people aren’t up in our business on our first day, that’s fine by me. If you want to have dinner at my place, that’s great. I don’t expect anything to happen on our first date, not even a kiss if you aren’t comfortable. We have time for that.” His words make me smile.
“You decide since you’re the one who works. It’s your only day off, and if you want to spend it at home, I won’t judge you.” I move my body, stretching it. It’s sore from being in the same position.
“Deal. Let’s see how my shift goes tomorrow. If it’s quiet and I get some rest in between, we’ll go out. Okay?”
“Sounds good. By the way, I spoke to Joy.” I stand, grabbing clothes from my dresser. When Canaan groans, I laugh.
“She’s fine. She wanted to know what was going on and shared her excitement. I told her nothing was going on yet.”
“You’ll need to rectify that, or she’ll never sell you another pastry,” he jokes.
“She knew we were going to talk. She won’t be surprised,” I explain.
“Good. Hopefully, that will hold her back from asking me too many questions.”
I laugh as I try to put on my underwear while cradling the phone between my ear and shoulder.
“Good luck. I’m sure she’ll still question you.”
“You’re right,” he sighs.
I yelp, almost tripping.
“What the hell happened?” His voice rises.
“Nothing, just trying to multitask and failing.”
He chuckles. “I’ll let you go then. I’ll call you Sunday after I get some sleep.”
“Okay, be safe.”
“Always,” I hear a smile in his voice.
My own smile grows, and I lean against my dresser. Excitement bubbles inside of me. It’s the first time in a long while that I’m actually excited about a date instead of going through the motions in search of my happily ever after.
