Canaan
Ican’ttearmy eyes away from Madelyn. After spending the day in the sun, her skin glows. The bridge of her nose and cheeks are pink, making her blue eyes as bright as a clear summer sky and her faint freckles stand out more. She throws her head back and laughs at something, the sound throaty and free. It makes my dick stir. The memories from earlier today rush my mind, and I clear my throat. I can’t be thinking about that in front of other people.
She eyes me but keeps her face toward Cassie, a friend of hers. After resting, we came to Pony Up for a drink. I didn’t want our day to end. As it is, I don’t want to drop her off at home. I’d love to continue our earlier activities in my bed, completely naked. I am trying to take things slow with her, but it’s proving to be impossible. The lake proved that.
“Hey.” I feel someone clap my back. I turn to see Levi and Camille.
“Hi.” I smile at them, slapping Levi’s hand. “What’s up?”
“We decided to have a night out.” He smiles at Camille, his arm wrapped around her waist.
“It’s needed sometimes,” I nod, taking a sip of my drink.
“Yeah. Hey, sis.” Levi smirks, eyebrows raised.
“Hey!” She turns to them. I watch as they greet each other. Cassie goes off to talk to some other friends, leaving the four of us.
While Levi and Camille order a drink, I move my arm around Madelyn and tug her close, running my nose along her cheek and inhaling the flowery perfume she put on. She giggles, her hand on my chest.
“Your breath tickles.” She angles her head away from me.
“You smell good,” I whisper, wanting to suck on her neck.
“I think Wilder and Hallie are coming, too,” Levi comments as he steps away from the bar and turns to us. He shakes his head with an arched eyebrow when he sees how close I’m standing to his sister.
Madelyn is the youngest in the family and the only girl, so I can imagine that her brothers and cousins are overprotective, but I’m not some chump that’s going to use her and leave her. And to be honest, Levi and Cole didn’t have the best track records in their dating history, so as long as I respect Madelyn, they don’t have a firm foundation to try to intimidate me.
“So this really is a thing?” Levi points the neck of his bottle between us.
I tighten my arm around her. “It is.” I keep my eyes trained on his.
Levi nods, looking between us.
“Babe…” Camille warns. I knew I liked her.
“What? I’m just asking a question. When I spoke to Madelyn about it, she said nothing was happening. I guess that changed quickly.”
“Levi,” Madelyn speaks up, arching an eyebrow as she glares at her brother. “You knew I had gone out with Canaan.”
He smirks. “Let me make him sweat a bit, damn it.” He laughs.
I shake my head at the fucker. “You know I wouldn’t crumble that easily.”
“I know, but it was worth a shot. It’s my duty to say that if you hurt her, I’ll kill you.” His face is so serious, I almost believe him.
Actually, I do believe that if anyone hurts his sister, he will kill them. I’d do the same for Joy. Hell, I lost my best friend for that very reason.
And now she’s living with him.
It’s all in the past now.
Levi switches to his usual easy-going smile in the blink of an eye as if he didn’t threaten me.
“Ignore him,” Madelyn leans in.
“He’s right, but I have no intentions of hurting you.” I squeeze her waist.
The smile that takes over her mouth is full of happiness. She kisses my cheek. I’ve never been with someone where I want to spend as much time with her as possible. I can’t get enough of Madelyn.
