“You just up and packed your SUV?”

“Yes. It wasn’t exactly the best exit strategy, but one of my roommates freaked about the package and I didn’t handle it correctly.”

Flashes of Dennelle’s icy blue eyes flashing indignation made my stomach twist again.

He tapped his finger on the steering wheel, but he said nothing.

“I was scared and it madethemscared. One of my former roommates wasn’t exactly the easiest to live with, and we…well, let’s just say I hope she’s not there when we stop in.”

“It was the first time you got something there?”

I nodded, hugging my iPad. “I tried not to overreact, but I’m really careful about keeping my privacy.”

He glanced at me, his eyes shark-flat before he returned his gaze to the road.

I tightened my hold on my tablet. The worst part of all of what was happening was that it brought up a lot of memories from college. I’d worked long and hard to have a safe life after Jason.

“What did Aidan say?”

“He didn’t.”

I twisted in my seat. “What do you mean, he didn’t?”

“He didn’t tell me jack. Just asked me to bring you in.”

I tucked my iPad away, grabbed my mug, and then I leaned against the door. I took a fortifying sip of the still hot coffee. “Is that usual for him?”

“I haven’t worked with him that often, but I do know he likes to keep things close to the vest.”

My vise grip on the mug eased. “So, maybe he’s just the cautious sort.”

He glanced at me again. “Maybe.”

“But you don’t think so.” It wasn’t even a question. While Ransom was a vault, even I could tell Aidan’s reaction made him tense.

“I can’t say what Aidan did on the initial search would hold up in court, but he and Poe are thorough. And if she found something, then it’s probably important.”

I bit my lower lip. I was well-versed in the proof game. One of the reasons why I’d left college had been because nothing Jason did could be construed as overly aggressive.

Getting an order of protection had done exactly nothing. He hadn’t been able to come within one-hundred yards of me. He’d been able to do plenty from afar.

Orders of protection hadn’t exactly caught up with the digital age.

“No questions about that?”

“I’m a true crime girl, Ransom. I get that stalking laws are about as gray as an April sky.”

“This isn’t a podcast.”

“I know that,” I snapped out. “I’m also a woman. We’re well-aware just how little power we have when it comes to an asshole who wants to come at us.”

His fingers tightened on the wheel. “I’m not letting anything happen to you. We don’t even know what this guy wants yet. It might just be a super fan thing.”

“I know.”

But I really didn’t think so.

The next ninety miles passed in silence. I finished my coffee and nibbled through my stash of Swedish Fish. I didn’t even want them, but they kept my mouth occupied. We fought over the radio a little, but in the end, I just let him listen to what he wanted.
