When You Find Your Person
I couldn’t believe he’d left me like that.
Hell, who was I fooling? I totally could. He was Ransom, after all.
I smiled brightly at my aunt. “He’s a bit…”
“Ransom?’
I laughed. See? “Yes, exactly.”
“He looks at you like you’re his last meal.”
“What? No, he doesn’t.” I glanced over my shoulder, and he was looking at me from the Jeep. Smoldering at me through the glass.
Damn, girl.
Okay, maybe he did. But that was just residual from the dressing room from… What? Hours ago? It felt like just minutes.
“You two suit each other.”
I slipped my arm through my aunt’s crooked arm. “Let’s not talk about stinky boys. How’s the orchard?”
“Busy as ever. What’s this I hear you’re moving back?”
I shrugged and walked with her over to the picnic tables in the outside eating area. “I’ve outgrown my tiny space in my apartment building.”
She sat across from me. “I don’t believe you.”
My aunt was too intuitive for her own good—and mine. “My roommates hate me.”
“I don’t believe that either.” She reached across the bleached wood to cover my hand. “Maybe they just don’t understand you. Many people don’t know how to deal with creative people. So many people go to their jobs and clock in and leave it all behind at the end of the workday. That doesn’t apply to people like us. Especially those of us who own our own business.” She propped her head on her hand, the familiar lines of her face calming me just by being there in front of me. “I can’t remember a time when I actually clocked out.”
“Me neither.” My gaze swung to Ransom. He was leaning on his Jeep, scrolling on his phone. He’d probably Googled “how to avoid messy family interactions” to look busy. “I’m not used to people understanding that part of me.”
“And he does?”
“Not really, but he doesn’t hold it against me. Most people get very annoyed with me.” One of the main things I’d taken with me from living in Brooklyn. Even Merry, who loved me, was often unsure how to handle me and my lifestyle.
“When you find your person, that’s how it works.”
I sat up straight. “It’s not like that.”
“Isn’t it?” She followed my sight line. “He keeps checking to see you’re over here.”
That was because he was on bodyguard duty. Not that anyone knew that part. “He’s just helping me with my move.”
“Speaking of your move, we can set you up in the lodge. I have a cute little corner room that would be perfect for you.”
I reached over to grip her hand. “This is your busy season. I couldn’t take a room.”
She straightened, dropping her other hand on top of mine. “Nonsense. I’d love to have you around. We can adjust the books. You can keep Rachel from going crazy with wedding plans. She’s running herself ragged.”
“I’ll definitely be helping her. But I’m working on something with Ransom for the wedding.”
Aunt Laverne arched a brow. “What kind of something?”
