“Let’s camp on the B loop. Last I checked, more of the spots were open there, so there won’t be as many neighbors while we camp out for a few days. I’ll try to get a feel for what’s going on with our new fucking stalker before we decide which direction to go next.”

“I can lead the young ones,” Alexandria offers. Her long brown hair swishes around her shoulders as she jolts forward to get my attention.

My lips twitch ahead of a dispute.

“They like me, Felix. They’ll follow.” Her green eyes glint sharply in warning not to underestimate her. She’s the newest member of our pack, and she brought an attitude problem with her. She’s also loyal as hell, and she proved it a few weeks ago.

The kids are really too young to be shifting, but they have to learn to adapt to live here. Not long after Alexandria showed up, she caught Hannah shifting without permission. If it hadn’t been for Alexandria, Hannah could have been seen by a big group of tourists.

And being seen puts all of us at risk. Alexandria saved our asses because she became one of us the second she found us. That’s what it means to be one of our pack. Once you’re in, you’re in for life.

“I’ll stay behind the others and make sure no one falls behind,” Corey chimes in, not one to be left out. It’s bittersweet watching him grow into his own; there’s only a matter of time before he comes for my throne as Alpha.

In this pack, an Alpha is chosen, but that doesn’t mean I would ever go out without a fight. This pack is all that I have.

An uncomfortable twinge in my chest spurs me to focus on something else.

“Fine.” I dismiss them with a nod and kneel to Lane’s height. “You ready for a ride?”

Lane drops his gaze to his feet and shrugs his slim shoulders. All these years together and the kid still clams up around me. To be fair, I’m not the problem. The kid doesn’t seem to care for anyone except his siblings and Doc, who brought the kids to the park.

“We’ll be close to Doc Warwick at the campground. You want to see Doc?” I’m not above a little bribery to get the kid moving.

His warm brown eyes finally meet mine. “I like Doc,” he says with a little nod.

“Great, let’s go see him.”

His deep brown eyes finally meet mine, and he nods as he stares at me with sudden, intense focus. Wherever the hell these kids first came from, it never ceases to amaze me how strong the genetics are.

Shelby, Corey, Jacob, Hannah, and Lane—no last name because no one knew it when the kids were handed off to Doc. Every single one of them has the same pair of warm brown eyes… all with the same haunted look in the depths of them. Wherever they came from, they’ll go back over my dead body.
