I walked closer to the dresser and looked at the picture frames—Shane with Mace and Dom; another one of the three of them with Lucille. And one of Shane with Tyren and Minsi. He wasn’t looking at the camera, but at his siblings. The love in his eyes shone through the paper.

If he had loved them so much, why did he leave them here?

Shane seemed confused about Minsi and Tyren, about me. But why?

I shut the door on my thoughts.

I wouldn’t let this moment, this hiccup, derail my mind and heart. Nothing had changed. Shane was still out there, carefree and happy.

I held on to that thought and filled my heart with anger again.

Better anger than hope.
