Lady Whitstone’s face grew even more rigid. “Yes, well, we were not sure we would need to utilize them. You can understand that I was pleased by the turnout.”

“Yes, of course. It was such a lovely ball too.” Lady Edith looked to me. “I suppose we should be on our way. So many things to do to prepare.”

Each woman curtsied, and we moved to exit when Lady Edith paused by the door. “Would you like to come to Chelton for tea? Perhaps Friday next.”

“We should like that very much,” Lady Whitstone replied.

Once we stepped outside, Lady Edith came close and lowered her voice. “If there is anyone in this town you need to be wary of, it is that woman, Felicity.”

I was surprised by the poison in her tone. “Did you not just invite her to Chelton?”

“Well, of course. We must keep her close so we know what to expect from her. By the time the Whitstones come to tea, many of the invitations for your ball will have been sent out, and she will surely delight in telling me how many of our neighbors plan to attend. It will be a good way to see how our invitations have been initially received.”

“I feel I have much to learn,” I said quietly.

Lady Edith looked at me with consideration. “All will be well, for I intend to teach you.”
