DONOVAN
It was the day to meet Savannah, and I was close to losing my shit.
I wished I could blame Savannah for it—be angry for her deception while thinking me a fool. But after seeing her leaving the library with her defenses down, looking as miserable as I felt, something rankled. The words she’d said during our date: ‘I’m just doing what I need to do, taking care of family duty.’ What the hell did she mean?
Is Gideon forcing her to do this?
Does he have something on her?
It didn’t matter; I told myself over and over. She was still doing it. She still planned on delivering me to Gideon for a resolution or payment. It didn’t matter which. Not when it puts me and the town at risk. But I also couldn’t help pine for the bounty hunter in ways that irritated me. I tried to reassure myself it would ease once I’d fucked her a few times. Something I planned to instigate soon. But my damn wolf was smitten, loving being near her, needing the touch, the contact.
Fuck! She was beautiful. And not my usual type. I preferred blondes or redheads with light eyes. Not that I’d rule anyone out, it was just my preference. But Savannah revealed parts of herself, slow and alluring, a new element of her knocking me off guard every second. Her curves, again, were another change for me. They swept in and out, setting me on edge. And those breasts! She reminded me of the carvings I’d done of the Goddess Leto.
The woman oozed femininity in a way where she didn’t even have to try. She naturally nurtured too. She paid attention to people and listened to what they had to say. Either she was a sociopath and a talented actress, or something more was going on.
Before heading out to meet Savannah as arranged at the coffeehouse, I called Kyran.
“Have you spoken to Emily and Frank about the arrangements for the cookout?” I demanded the second Kyran answered the phone.
“Someone’s got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning,” he retorted, but I heard the mirth.
“It’s noon. And I’m fine. Answer the damn question.”
“Oh yeah. You need to screw the hunter. And soon.”
“I’m working on it,” I bit out. “Trust me.”
“Can’t seal the deal? I can try with her?”
I growled. “I’m doing fine. But it’s hard getting close to someone who is preparing to stab you in the back.”
“And you’ll feel better once you’ve had your way with her a few times. Just do it. Stop trying to woo her.”
“I’m not wooing her.”
“Grace is keeping me posted. You’re trying to impress her. Don’t. She wants you to be eating out of her palm, so make her work for it. The quicker you do it, the quicker she’ll make her move. So do her, act all in love and shit, and then confront her. Make her tell you what she knows.”
My wolf growled so loudly inside me it almost deafened. “My wolf wants to rip out your throat.”
He laughed. “Figured as much. But look, you’re not doing yourself any favors by dragging this out. And you like her. I’m not stupid. So don’t make this any more complicated than it has to be. Do what you have to do.”
I sighed. As much as my wolf wanted to sleep with Savannah, it didn’t want to do anything that pushed her away. But the man, the one in charge, knew Kyran spoke sense for once.
“Sort out the shit with Emily and Frank.”
“Already done,” he replied. “Emily is arriving at your place Saturday morning, so consider yourself warned.”
“You’re in my bad books, Kyran the Fucker.”
“No, I’m not. And calling me has helped, hasn’t it? Go screw the hunter.”
“I hate you.”
“Yeah. Hate you, too.”
I hung up as Kyran’s laughter echoed through the phone.
