“To do what?”
“Manage, maybe.”
“Really?”
“I won’t be able to keep my schedule now that I’ve got the kids.”
“That’s true. Why Jeriann?” I mean, I’d hire her in an instant to manage the place, but I didn’t think Rome appreciated her skill set. “And not Jackie?”
“Jeriann’s got more experience. She’s bartended before, plus she doesn’t take shit from anybody.”
Well, if that’s the criteria, why not Monica? Except I don’t ask him that.
“Make sense. She’s a good choice.”
“Hopefully.” Rome lets the door go, and I step out onto his front porch. “See you tomorrow.”
“Yep.”
On my way to the bus stop, the one I take to the El (or elevated train) stop, I think about the day and smile. Even with Ryann being a pain in the butt, it was still a lot of fun. I laugh, recalling Calvin’s reaction when we stopped at the market closest to the house to pick up dinner.
“Frozen pizza?” Calvin said with a gasp as I pointed to the freezer case at the store.
“Yep. You get to pick which one you want.”
“Frozen?” he asked again. “Dad really needs to teach you how to cook.”
And right then, my mind goes to a very dirty place. One where Rome James teaches me how to cook, naked. Him. Not me. “I’ll mention it to him.”
