It has me curious. “What is Rome doing tomorrow night? He’s always there on Sundays.”

“Maybe he’s got a hot date?”

I frown at her suggestion. Could he have a date? My frown turns into something else altogether. A pinch of sadness and a smidgeon of disappointment.

“I knew it. You’re totally into that man.”

“I’m a little into him,” I confess. “But it’s a pointless endeavor. He’s way out of my league, and it would be majorly inappropriate.”

“You have no idea how gorgeous you are, and that pisses me off,” Jeriann says, standing up because our stop is next.

“It pisses you off?” Why?

“Yeah. You’re one of the prettiest people I’ve ever met, inside and out.”

“Oh, you’ve seen my insides?” I snort. “Gross.”

“You know what I mean, smart-ass.” Jeriann’s mood has seemed to plummet. “You’ll see. One of these days, that man’s going to grow a pair and kiss the stuffing out of you.”

“Nope. Never gonna happen.” Never.

We walk in silence to our apartment building. I reach my door first; before we say our goodbyes, Jeriann has one more thing to say. “And by the way. You do know Rome is sending Calvin to you to babysit. Right?” She smirks as she passes by me.

“Yep.” And I don’t mind a bit. Calvin’s an awesome kid and a great help at work.

“You’d better bill him.”

“Nope.”

“Sucker.”

“I suppose.” Like I said, I like Cal. “I don’t mind, though. Sundays are slow anyway.”
