“Yeah, so get used to it.” Dust stands and pulls me up with him. “I’m loaning you the money. End of story.”

“No, you’re not, but I appreciate the offer.” I walk my way to the bathroom and look over my shoulder, teasing him. “But I have to do this on my own.” I flash him a naughty and drop the sheet letting it pool at my feet.

“Damn, girl.” He bites on his knuckles.

“But you know what I can’t do on my own?”

“What’s that?”

“Shower.”

“I can do that.” He winks.

“I’m counting on it.”

Dusty

I know Beth said she can do this on her own, but I refuse to let her give up any part of her dream. And since I’m in this for the long haul, I’m going to make sure that every—single—one of them comes true. Beth has worked hard trying to prove herself. This ends today. I have a plan. I’m taking over and proving myself to her once and for all.

We pull up to the lumber yard. Beth has to pick up a few things, and I have a master plan to set into motion. Starting with Tony. After Beth gives him her order and confirms delivery details, she goes off in search of the perfect rocking chairs but gets sidetracked by more animals while I get busy with operation save the barn.

“Oh!” Beth follows the line of kids. “Baby chicks.”

“No.” I close my ey

es, thinking about how much trouble the goats have already been.

“Why not?”

“Do you want a farm or a party venue?”

“Fine.” Beth pouts. “I’ll just look then.”

“Look. Don’t touch!” I call after her.

She gives me a thumbs up.

Making sure she’s out of sight, I run back up to Tony. “Hey, man. I need your help, and we have to work fast.”

“What’s that?”

“Cancel everything she ordered.” I pull out the list I tucked into the waistband of my shorts. “She wants this.”

“She does?” Tony purses his lips. “Or you do?”

“Trust me.”

Tony and I get locked in a stare down. I can do this all day.

“I don’t know, Dusty. What if she doesn’t want it?”

I reach into my wallet and pull out my card, scanning the area to make sure she doesn’t overhear.

“Put this on file. I’ll pay for everything. Tack on ten percent if you want. Just order her the damn stuff and have it delivered to my address, okay?”

Tony takes the sheet. “And if she rejects it?”

“Then who cares? It’s on my bill.”
