“I think I prefer to stand, but thanks,” she said, inching even closer to him.At the rate she was going, he was going to be pressed up against the door in no time.
“No can do, Ms.Adams,” he said.“I have to take your blood pressure and temperature. So have a seat.”
“I can already tell you they’ve both gone up since you walked into this room, Doc,” she said, fluttering her eyelashes.Brant pretended to play dumb.
“Do I need to tell Patty to turn on the air conditioning?”he asked.“It is getting pretty warm outside.”
Patty finally let out a loud breath and rolled her eyes.“Look, Doc.Here’s the thing.I’m just gonna lay it all out there because you’re kinda dense when it comes to the charms of a woman.”
Brant wasn’t dense when it came to the charms of a woman. He was trying like hell to avoid the charms ofthiswoman.
“I tried to win you in the auction the other night and was pretty sure I had the winning bid until thathussyteacher outbid me,” she said.“Surely you saw me bidding?”
“The lights on stage were really bright,” he lied.“I couldn’t really see out in the audience.”
“Well, I was all kinds of pissed that she won and then I wasreallypissed when I found out she didn’t evenkeepthe date and gave it to that Colleen Chandler instead.”
“Do you have something against Colleen?”he asked.
“No.She does amazing things to my hair,” she said, fluffing the rat’s nest on top of her head.Brant was willing to bet June’s hair lookednothinglike that when she left Colleen’s shop.“ButwhyKaren didn’t give me the date is the question. She knew I was bidding.KnewI had the hots for you.Hell, she’s probably sensed our budding attraction to one another.”
Brant didn’t even have a response to that comment. What was there to say?
“So why give it to CC?”
“I don’t like donkeys,” he blurted.June narrowed her eyes.
“What did you say?”
“I said I…I…I don’t like donkeys,” he stammered.“What good are they? You can’t ride them like a horse and you can’t eat them like a cow. They’re pretty much useless.”
June jumped off the table like she had been shot.“Tell me you don’t believe that.Tell me you’re lying.”
Brant shook his head.“Nope.Not lying. They’re the dumbest animals ever. And that braying sound…could there be a more annoying sound on the face of the planet?”
June stormed toward him, anger reflected in her eyes.Brant swallowed hard.He had just pissed off a woman.A really, really, really big woman. She might just crush him with her man hands.Or boobs. He could be smothered by her boobs.
“Well, then, Doc,” she said, slapping the countertop.Brant jumped at the sound as it echoed through the small room.“That settles it.”
“Settles what, June?”
“You just ain’t the man for me.Anyone who is dumb enough not to realize what amazing creatures donkeys are don’t deserve to get with this piece of sexy ass.”June stomped out the door, slamming it behind her.Brant slumped on the counter in relief.Thank the lord for Patty.
As if she read his mind, his receptionist peeked her head around the corner.“Well, did it work?”
“Like a charm. How did you know that would get her to leave?”
“It was a gamble.I figured she’d leave or beat you to a pulp.”
“Patty! What if shehadbeaten me to a pulp instead of just leaving?”
Patty shrugged her shoulders.“I was just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.”
“I definitely think she’ll leave me alone now.I told her they were useless and the dumbest animals ever.I also told her their braying sound was the most annoying sound on the face of the planet.”
Patty’s eyes went wide.“You didn’t,” she breathed.
“I did.Did I go too far?”
