She’d laughed at me this morning when I smacked my head on the metal bar over her shower as I tried to wash my hair under the spout that only came up to my fucking shoulders. And I’d tried my best to not snap and grump too much about how miserable I was given that it had been my stubbornness that made me insist on staying with her regardless of where she stayed. But all was well because she’d tried to make up for it by falling to her knees in front of me in her bedroom and sucking my cock like a fucking dream until I came down her throat for all my troubles.
But it was the end of the day now and it was Friday and I wanted nothing more than to take her to my home and stay locked away until Monday morning. She’d brought a bag of clothes with her this morning when we left her apartment so I had a good feeling she would stay with me all weekend. And I had a couple of surprises for her too that I hoped she would be okay with.
“Here’s Monday’s schedule and your itinerary for our trip Monday Night sir.” Veronica said, stepping into my office and pulling my attention from the view out my window.
“Huh?” I asked, scowling as she handed me paperwork. She cocked her hip against my desk and crossed her arms over her chest as I read through the papers.
“You have four meetings Monday morning, and then we leave for the airport at two pm. Your jet is taking us directly to Atlanta and we’ll go from the airport right to the building site to see the updates and approve new ones. Then we’ll go to the hotel and have dinner there, I booked your favorite table at Le Crème and Tuesday we’ll spend all day at the Potter building negotiating and dealing and return home on the jet that evening at seven pm.” She explained, exactly like the paperwork said and acid burned in my stomach.
I’d forgotten about this trip and hated the idea of leaving Cora overnight already. I also knew she wasn’t going to like that Veronica was coming with me for it.
“Thank you Veronica.” I said, setting the papers down on my desk and rubbing my forehead.
“Do you have a headache? I can get you some medicine.” She said softly, putting her hand on my shoulder and squeezing it like she was offering to massage it for me. Which to be honest, wouldn’t be the first time she’s done that, but this time her hand burned me where it touched. I shrugged it off and pushed my chair back and stood up.
“I’m fine thank you; I’m just going to get going for the day I think.”
“Already? You’ve been leaving by five pm every day this week, you’re usually the last one here. Is everything okay sir?”
“Everything is fine Veronica. I’m going to be leaving at five from now on, so make sure my schedule doesn’t interfere with that.”
“If you think that’s best sir.”
That made me pause, looking over at her. She wasn’t usually so bold, and she was toeing a line she was dangerously close to crossing.
She sighed and leaned off my desk and stepped even closer to me. “I just would hate to see you lose your focus and let someone take your attention away from all of this.” She held up her hands, highlighting my office and domain. “You’ve worked so hard to get here and you deserve so much Maverick, I just want to make sure you don’t let someone take it all away from you.”
I clenched my jaw, her message, while veiled was clear. I turned off my computer and shoved the paperwork in my briefcase and then leaned towards her, leveling her with my stare. Her eyes rounded and her lips parted as I moved closer to her and at first I thought it was fear, but then a smile pulled her lips up on the edges and I saw her in a new light.
“Let me make a few things extremely clear to you Veronica. You will address me as Mr. Jones or nothing else. I’ve never given you permission to call me Maverick.” Her smile fell and she took a quick breath in. “You will also never impose yourself into my personal life again. I know exactly how hard I’ve worked to get to where I am because I was the one fucking doing the work. I also know I’ve earned a bit of a break from the sixteen-hour days I’ve put in to get here.” My hands clenched into fists, and I knew I needed to get her out of my office before I really let loose on her. “Consider this strike two for you, the first one was you gossiping about me fucking my girlfriend in my office the other day. If you get to three I’ll fire you. I’m done giving you warnings Veronica.”
“Sir, I didn’t mean –“
“Yes you did. And you’ve tried more times in the last week than I can count to get me to notice you sexually as well, and maybe you’ve always been so bold, and I’ve never paid attention or maybe you’re just getting too comfortable here. Either way it ends right here, right now.” I snapped, loving the way her face crumbled as she shrunk back. “You’re a damn good assistant but I can find another one who gives me less headache in an instant. Now get out of my office and go home!”
“Mr. Jones please –“
“Now!”
She turned and all but ran from my office and I watched as she gathered her things and scurried into the elevator, passing Dexter on her way.
He eyed her suspiciously and then walked directly into my office. “Something up with Red?”
“Yeah she got the notion she could flirt with me and that I’d take her up on it.”
“Ooh.”
“Keep your eye on her for me would you? I don’t need a lawsuit from her if I fire her for jealousy.”
“I’ll document it and have Sebastian put it in her file. She’s most definitely the type of woman to go full vindictive crazy if things don’t go her way.”
I grunted and grabbed my stuff, looking at my watch to see it was now ten after five. “I’m out of here.”
“Any big plans for this weekend with your new love life?” He asked with genuine curiosity in his eyes.
“Big ones, just none that are appropriate to share with friends.” I said, winking at him and clapping him on the back as I passed him on my way to the elevator.
He laughed and nodded his head. “I remember those days. Enjoy.”
