“Yeah, just a weird dream.”
He reached over and squeezed my leg, giving me some comfort. I looked back and found Asa had his eyes closed on the seat, so I turned back to the front. Music played softly as we drove, and thoughts I’d been trying to ignore about the two men in the car began to filter through. It was like my brain was going to make me think about one thing or the other. I couldn’t ignore both.
The guys seemed to have accepted what I’d shared with them about my past and why I’d left, but would they when I told them everything?
Was I only asking for heartache getting involved with Cohen, too? I think I had it best when I just focused on one boy. Less likely to screw it up that way.
Twisting my body to get comfortable, I jumped when a hand clamped down on my thigh. I followed the arm up to find it belonged to Cohen.
“Stop whatever torture you’re putting yourself through right now. Quit trying to predict everything and just let things happen.”
“I—“
“You were. You forget that we both know you,” Asa piped in from the back, apparently not as asleep as I’d assumed. He leaned forward, poking his head between the seats. “Trust, babe.”
“How did you know?” I asked, noticing that Cohen wasn’t in any hurry to move his hand.
“You’ve moved every two seconds and have sighed or huffed every three.”
Chuckling, I tried not to think about how hot my face was getting. “Sorry.” I turned my head to look out the window, needing a little space. Asa had insisted on letting me sit up here, but it felt like I was under a spotlight.
“How about we play a game to get to know one another better?” Asa asked, pulling me back to face him.
“What kind of game?” The mention of games had me souring, the ones with Blackhawk not ending how I ever thought they would.
“Since we’re in a car, we could do something like 20 Questions or two truths and a lie.”
“Two truths and a lie?” I asked, not having heard of it before.
“It's exactly as it sounds. You give two truths and one lie, and we have to try to figure out which one is the lie.”
“Huh, okay, that sounds interesting. You first, though,” I teased, giving him a peck on the lips.
Asa smiled brightly, warming my insides. I swear, he had the power to light the whole world, or at least mine.
“You in, Cohen?” Asa asked.
“Yeah, sure, why not.” He shrugged, and I realized his thumb had started to rub on the inside of my leg. Swallowing, I debated moving so it would make his hand move, but I hadn’t found the willpower yet to do it.
“Hmm, okay. I’ve got it. I once met Hulk Hogan. I’m allergic to strawberries. I’ve never roller skated.” He ticked them off on his fingers, saying them all with the same tone of voice, giving nothing away. It had me looking at my boyfriend in a whole new way. I observed his facial features as he stared at me, grinning.
“Hmm.” I tapped my finger on my lips as I debated.
“I know,” Cohen said smugly. “You guess first, sweetheart.”
My cheeks warmed, and I didn’t know if I hated or loved when he called me that. “Fine, turd.” I stuck out my tongue, again trying to take their attention away from my ever-heating cheeks.
“Geesh, I feel like a horrible girlfriend. I’m going to go with Hulk Hogan.” I sat back, looking over at Cohen. He still had his smug face as he navigated around a car, turning his blinker on. He had to move his hand to grab the wheel, and I hated how much I missed it already.
“Nope, it’s roller skating,” he answered, peering into the rearview mirror. His smug smile grew at whatever he saw there, and I whipped my head around to look at Asa.
“He’s right?” I asked a slight screech to my voice.
“Yup,” Asa said, laughing.
“But… but…” I sputtered, not understanding. “You’ve met Hulk Hogan? I knew about the strawberries, thank God, or I’d be a worthless girlfriend.”
“Hey,” Asa said, grabbing my face, stopping me from spiraling. “It’s a game to get to know one another. I picked things I knew you wouldn’t know. It’s not meant to make you feel bad.” His palms cupped my whole face, the rough sides of his hands feeling comforting as he stared into my eyes. Eventually, I nodded, licking my lips.
