"Yeah?” I turn toward her. “Well, I'm scared. What if I can't do this?"
"I've known you for as long as I can remember, and there has never been anything you haven't been able to do. I truly feel this is going to be so good for you. You've been Andrea Raffield so long that you forgot who Andi Carrera was. Who she can be."
"And who shewillbe." I reach out for my best friend's hand and squeeze it for reassurance. I'm glad Lindsay is with me for the first week of this adventure. I'm not sure I'd want to start this alone.
"Seattle, here we come!" Lindsay shouts out the window as I turn onto the freeway. "Oh! You know what we need?"
"What?" I ask, grinning from ear to ear. Her excitement is contagious.
"Music! I've made a playlist with all our favorite songs from the bands who are playing this weekend. I still can't believe you've never been to a festival."
"Jason was never a fan of crowds, loud music, or fun for that matter."
For the first few hours, we do nothing but munch on unhealthy snacks, drink lousy gas station coffee, and sing at the top of our lungs.
By the third hour, I notice a pattern in the music. "Why is every other song from The Nashville Hustlers? You've never been a fan."
"Yeah, well, I like them now." She quickly skipped to the next song to avoid being called out again.
"Alright, spill it. What are you hiding?"
"What? Why would you think I'm hiding something?" She giggles, and her face turns three different shades of red.
"I know you better than anyone, Lindsay Moore. And you, my friend, are hiding something from me."
"You have to promise not to be pissed at me."
"You know damn well I won't make that promise, but I promise not to stay upset with you."
"I've kind of been dating Jacob Bell for the last couple of months."
"What in the holy hell are you talking about? Are you talking about Jacob Bell, the singer for Nashville Hustlers? My favorite band since I was seventeen years old?"
"That would be him." She shrugs amid her confession.
"What the…? How in the world?" My face crunches in utter confusion.
"After he and his ex-girlfriend separated, she moved to Sonoma with her sister. Their daughter, Stevie Ann, was in my class last year. One afternoon, Jacob picked her up, and we instantly hit it off. We've been talking ever since. He asked me to come to hang out with him this weekend."
"I'm your best friend. How could you have not told me?" My feelings are more hurt that she kept a secret this big from me than I am angry about it.
"His break-up with Shayna was new, and we were just talking. It wasn't anything to write home about."
"And it is now?" I press her for anything she's willing to share.
"I don't know. Jacob's not my boyfriend, but we aren't dating anyone else either."
At that moment, my teenage self takes over. "Oh! My! God!" I throw my hands over my mouth, losing all conscious thought for a moment.
"What?" Lindsay shouts while grabbing the wheel because of my disregard for our lives.
"You have Jacob Bell's phone number!"
"You are such a dork. You better not fangirl all over my new guy this weekend and make me look like a crazy person alongside you."
"Ooh, so heisyour new guy?" I tease.
"Just shut up and drive."
