“See? They did a good job, those salesmen,” he said. “They fooled you. Fooled all of us, really. They got us to spend our money.”

“So, you want to lie to people,” I said, “in order to make money.”

“Sure,” he replied, like he was lacking a sense of morality.

We headed toward Elliot’s car. He took the driver’s side, and I settled in the passenger’s seat beside him while Leo and Felix climbed in the back. Just as Elliot turned on the engine, I felt my phone vibrate once again, and looked down at it.
