Desiree smiled. “After you left the kitchen, I came in. Tanner told me that he would not be a good husband or father. He didn’t want to embarrass his children. Evidently when Travis told him Samantha was pregnant, he worried about you getting pregnant. He still doesn’t believe in himself.”

Oh dear, she could be pregnant at this very moment. But this all seemed so farfetched.

“Well, ladies, while I think you’re right, it doesn’t change things. He wants me gone. He told me to leave, that I was just a hookup that had lasted too long. So I’m going to load up the bug and I’ll be leaving.”

Desiree hugged her. “I’m so sorry. You’re perfect for him and he’s too stubborn to see it.”

“Don’t give up,” Samantha told her. “It took me and Travis splitting up before we realized how we’d made a huge mistake. It still could happen.”

Emily wasn’t going to hold her breath. She was walking out of here and moving on.

“Eugenia, better luck next time,” Emily told her. “One thing you’ve accomplished is that I no longer fear ghosts. As long as they’re as good as you are, then I have nothing to fear.”

“We’ll see each other again,” Eugenia said. “For now, I’ve got work to do.”

She swirled out of sight and Emily felt the tears spilling down her cheeks. It was over and now it was time for her to go.

“Good-bye, ladies. And good luck with the baby,” Emily said, thinking of how she could possibly be pregnant at this very moment.

But Tanner would never know. If he didn’t believe he was good enough to be a husband and father, she would not push him.

And she deserved a man who wanted her. Someone who promised to be a good man who loved her with all his heart.

Loading up her yellow bug, she glanced around at the ranch one last time before she climbed behind the wheel. Time to move on.
