“That is none of your business.”
“It is and you’ll tell me, or you won’t make it out of the city alive.”
Law barks a laugh. “You’ve got some balls to threaten me. I don’t give a damn whether you’re an angel or a demon; the only one dying in a fight that you’ve started tonight is you.”
“There are high demons afoot and I can assure you, if you’re planning to join their fight against God, you won’t live.”
“We’re not here to work with demons. We’re here to see a witch about getting into the Fae kingdom.”
The angel’s eyes widen. “The Fae? Why?”
“They have my sister,” I say, contributing to the conversation for the first time. “And they know about this bond we have.”
“You’re insinuating that the Fae have concerned themselves with human girls?”
I nod. “We believe she was replaced with a changeling that died.”
“This is a very curious turn of events,” the angel says to nobody in particular. He turns to Law. “What’s happening with your kind? You’re spreading like lice all over the world.”
“That has nothing to do with me. My brother and I are trying to stop it.”
“You’re behind the camps farther west?”
“Yes. Should I even ask how the fuck you know about that?”
The angel simply grins in response and the topic is abandoned.
“Do you know that high demons have created more of their kind in your likeness? The hunters are here to wipe the world of the vermin. Your kind should stay away from here unless they want to be snuffed out too.”
“I know nothing about the demons. I only learnedyourkind were in town recently. We’re here to see about the portal to the Fae kingdom, and then we’ll be out of here.”
“See that you’re quick about it. I can’t promise that I’ll be around to stop the next group of hunters. They’re a swirly bunch.”
“No offense, but I’m not too concerned about your mortal hunters. Their blades can’t kill me.”
Ezekiel shrugs. “They’re not exactly mortal.”
Law’s lips thin and his eyes narrow. “Then what are they?”
“Nephilim.”
I say the word, trying to remember if I’ve ever heard the term.
“Good luck,” the angel says to both of us. “I’ll be seeing you soon.”
With that, the wings spread out and the angel shoots toward the sky, leaving us alone in the dark, with more questions than answers. As usual.
