Page 134 of Blood that Burns
“Sunshine, your guess is as good as mine. But wherever we are, we need to move fast, unless you want to succumb to the pull of these poppies.”
My brow lifts. “Those are not poppies, Law, they’re tulips and...clovers.”
His eyes narrow and he takes a closer look at the flowers. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” I start to laugh. “This isn’tThe Wizard of Oz, and you aren’t the cowardly lion. Dear God, please tell me you’re not a coward after all?”
“Why did I come with you again?” he deadpans, moving forward between a row of tulips, right through the clover scattered at our feet.
“What do you make of this?” I ask, looking around at the endless field.
“What do you mean?” he asks, glancing at me from the corner of his eyes.
“I don’t see an end in sight. There’s nothing ahead as far as the eye can see.”
He blows out a breath. “I didn’t suppose this was going to be an easy adventure, sunshine. It’s likely we’ll be walking for some time before we see anything.”
He grabs my hand, squeezing, but doesn’t drop it. “Do these clovers remind you of anything?” he asks.
I peer over at him, grinning like a fool. “You mean the clover you had stuffed under your mattress?”
On all that is holy, I swear, Law Bellamy’s cheeks turned pink. And damn did it look sexy as hell on him.
“Found that, did you?” he asks, looking straight ahead.
“Mmmhmm.”
He chuckles, shaking his head. “You know, I always wondered what you wished that day.”
“You mean to tell me you weren’t reading my mind?”
His lips form a thin line. “I didn’t always have access to your thoughts, Maggie. It wasn’t like I was trying to invade your privacy at every turn.”
“I know that,” I say, lifting his hand to my mouth and placing a kiss on the top of it.
We walk for several minutes and still, there’s nothing on the horizon. With every step we take, I wonder if we’ve been sent on a fool’s errand. We already went through a damn portal. How much farther do we need to go?
“So,” Law says, drawing my attention back to him. “Are you going to tell me?”
My eyes narrow. “Tell you what?”
“The wish, sunshine. What did you wish on that four-leaf clover?”
I knew exactly what he was asking. I’m only stalling because it’s so embarrassing. It’s not a secret I’ve wanted him for a long time, but admitting that he was at the center of my childish wish on a good-luck charm is too much with him right next to me.
“Let me guess,” he says, with that sexy smirk plastered across his face.
I eye him wearily, not sure I can handle whatever he’s about to say.
“I wish that Law would—”
I quickly turn, placing my hand over his mouth to stop whatever he’s about to say, because it will undoubtedly be too close for comfort.
“Ha. I knew it. You wanted me to fuck you even then.”
I groan. “Do you have to be so crass?”
“Psst, you like it,” he says, teasing me. I roll my eyes, done being baited by him.
