Law stops pacing and our eyes meet. “And what about you?”

He studies my face and I squirm, feeling insecure and ill prepared to answer this question. I haven’t had time to truly consider my feelings. Everyone else believed her, so I did.

“I won’t pretend that I have it all figured out.”

His eyes bore into mine. “But what does your gut say?”

I deliberate over his question, thinking back on my meeting with Reese, recalling her words, body language, sincerity. It doesn’t take long to arrive to my answer.

“My gut says to listen to her.” He nods his head slowly, seeming to digest my response. “Why do you ask? What’s going on?”

“From what I’ve heard, Lucresse hasn’t communicated with any of her sisters, or any other coven for that matter. She went dark. Nobody’s seen her.”

“I didn’t get that impression from Addy or Katina. It sounds like they’ve stayed in touch.”

Law grunts. “I’m sure Addy’s father would love to know that. Damn her, always pushing the boundaries of the Council.”

“From what I’ve gathered, that’s not a bad thing. The Council is evil, Law.”

His face screws up as though I’ve insulted him in some way. “I’m not arguing that. I just question what Addy was up to. They hadn’t been friends before, as far as I know. Why did she seek her out? And Katina... whose side is she on?”

I shrug my shoulders. “I think they’re both on whoever’s side can take down the Council, but it never came up. Our conversation only pertained to the upcoming auction. What’s going on, Law? What aren’t you saying?”

His jaw tightens. “Lucresse Villemont was banished from this property and Katina was told not to communicate with her ever again.”

My lips purse. “Who had her banished?”

“That isn’t important.”

I frown at Law’s sudden attitude. Not only is he acting defensive, but he’s shifty, which is not like him.

“It actually is important. Why do I get the feeling you had something to do with that?”

It’s his turn to pull a face, but the phony look of disgust doesn’t hide his guilt. I see it. More importantly, Ifeelit.

“Law,” I drag out his name, never removing my eyes from him. “What did you do?”

“I need to find her.” Law starts toward the door and my hand comes up, stopping him from saying or doing anything else.

“Wait. Where are you going?”

Law spins towards me. “I’m going to see Lucresse. I want to know why she’s back here.”

“I can tell you why she’s here. Katina and Addy invited her to share her vision... which pertains to Marina and me.”

Law blows out a breath, stalking toward the chair and slumping down into it again. “That’s all you discussed? The auction?”

“I already told you that.” My fists settle onto my hips, and I hope it portrays that I’m losing patience with the non-answers and suspicious attitude. “What are you hiding? I won’t ask again.”

Law’s eyes are cast downward, and he worries at his fingers. “We have history.”

I wince at the mention of history between the two. It shouldn’t matter, given we aren’t a couple, but it has the effect of being kicked in the gut. She’s good enough to have him. I’m not.

She’s beautiful. Exotic. Everything I’m not.

“It wasn’t like that, sunshine. Our history revolved around a common interest.”

My teeth grind as I try and fail to keep the jealousy and rising anger at bay. I’m tired of having to pry things from Law when I’ve always been an open book. No more. Not if he’s going to insist on keeping his secrets.
