Thankfully, Micah and I were the only ones up that early and I was able to sneak home, change, and rush to class without being caught. The thought makes my cheeks heat even though they didn’t see me doing the walk of shame.

Can I even call it that?

I’m not ashamed of what we did, only the fact they may have heard.

And it’s not like it was a one-time deal. Or even the first time.

It was amazing, though. Which is why I want Micah to stay over at my place tonight. I plan to request a repeat performance.

MICAH: Is that a yes? I’m bringing my toothbrush just in case.

ME: Yes. But you have to sneak in. Guys aren’t allowed in the dorms after eight.

Why am I telling him this? He knows. He’s snuck into my dorm before, to see other girls.

The thought makes my cheeks flush with anger, images of Micah with other women invading my mind. I push them away, reminding myself what he said last night. First to his brother, then to me when we were alone.

His words caused my heart to stop for a second before beating against my sternum in an attempt to leap into his hands.

I make him want to be a better person.

He wants to claim me, protect me.

This isn’t just about sex.

Which it was with the other girls. He didn’twantto be with them the way he does me. He didn’tneedmore from them than a roll in the sheets. He made his intentions clear with them... no strings attached.

And he’s made his intentions clear with me. There are strings. And they’re weaving into an intricate pattern I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to untangle. Which scares the living hell out of me as much as it intrigues me.

MICAH: Okay. What time?

ME: Come over about ten. You’ll have to come through the window.

MICAH: Good thing you’re on the bottom floor.

ME: You’d find a way.

MICAH: Damn straight. See you at ten. Want me to bring anything?

ME: Just yourself.

MICAH: {winky face emoji}

I’m just taking a seat when Kendall breezes through the door, waving at me over her head. She’s smiling brightly as she makes her way to where I’m seated in the far back corner of the coffeehouse. There are tables by the windows, and even a few on the patio, but I was aiming for privacy since I know where this conversation is headed.

“Hey!” Kendall drops into the seat across from me, letting out a heavy sigh. “It’s hot out there today. I can’t believe you’re not sweating, and you walked over here.”

“You get used to it after a while. Plus, don’t you have air conditioning in your car?”

“Nope. I can’t wait to get rid of that piece of crap. Another month and I should have enough saved to buy something better.”

“At least you have a car,” I note, taking a sip of my iced mocha. “I’d kill for a car. I always feel bad bumming rides from other people.”

Kendall sits up a little straighter in her seat, her face lighting up with delight as she leans forward. “You want my car?”

“Um, you just said it’s a piece of shit, K. Plus, what would you drive?”

“When I get my new car. It’s all yours if you want it. I just got it back from the shop, so it’s running pretty good aside from the fact the air doesn’t work. The passenger side mirror is hanging off. And it doesn’t always like to get up to speed on the highway, but it’s better than nothing. It’s not like you leave campus that often, but if you wanted to, you’d at least have a way to get wherever you needed to go. You know, like Micah’s apartment …” She lets her voice trail off, effectively steering the conversation in the direction I expected her to as soon as she sat down.
