Cash wandered over to me and whispered an apology in my ear.
I looked into his eyes and smiled. “It’s been the most entertaining camping trip I’ve ever been on.”
Cash smiled and kissed my cheek.
“Oh, come on.” Brielle stomped her foot again. “I want that. Hunter, why aren’t you sweet like that?”
Cash’s chest rumbled as he kept his laughter in.
“I didn’t think you were into that. You always make fun of couples being sweet.”
“Funny what the wine brings out in a person,” Cash whispered, chuckling.
He hung his arm around my shoulders, and I clasped his hand as we continued watching the show.
“Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I want the happily-ever-after.” She turned to Cash, and he hugged me harder. “When you’re ready for a little more excitement, give me a call. Come on, Hunter.”
Hunter opened his mouth and smacked it back down as she marched into the camper to pack.
“And then there were three?” I said softly, looking into Cash’s gaze.
“Three?” Cash’s brows rose.
“Chewie.”
“Oh, right.” He grinned. “I think I’ll like it better this way.”
“I didn’t exactly say we weren’t serious. She caught me off guard, and I told her we hadn’t been together all that long and weren’t exclusive.” I pressed my lips together.
Cash laughed. “We’re not exclusive? Is there someone else I should know about?”
I chuckled. “I told you, I got all confused.”
“So, you’re not seeing anyone on the side?” he teased, shaking his head. “I didn’t even pay attention to what she said.”
“I’m sure you caught that she wants to be next in line,” I joked.
“Well, I did catch that.” He brought me in for a hug. “But there is no line.”
I rested my head on his chest, feeling the gentle beats of his heart, but all I could think about were his brother’s words, and I didn’t know what to do.
Because I knew I couldn’t promise more than I could give.
Chapter Twenty-Six
Cash
“Don’t even think about trying to cram in here,” Maya teased, letting the suds rinse down her body.
I laughed and shook my head. “I wouldn’t even think of it. We don’t need to call the volunteer fire department because two naked adults are stuck in a Winnebago shower.”
Maya’s little snort filled me with happiness. After Hunter and Brielle drove off, never to return, Maya and I had an amazing dinner and night.
But my brother’s words continued to haunt me. He was right. My dad and Hunter saw me when I’d done something absolutely stupid, reckless... because I’d stopped caring. I’d forgotten that life wasn’t just about me. I had a family that needed me, and I slowly got back on track, thanks to soul-searching and therapy. It was something we’d never brought up again, and yet, here he did... because of Maya.
“Could have happened yesterday with Brielle’s mishap. Get the volunteers up here to see an eye full.” She chuckled. “She had piercings in places that I had to look up. I couldn’t even imagine the pain.”
“Really?”
