“Which is?”
“Annoyance.” She looked into my eyes and smiled. “Just promise me one thing. If we don’t work out, you’ll be okay.”
I nodded.
She hugged me tighter, and I knew I was lying. I’d probably be destroyed. Maybe my brother was right.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Maya
“Tell me all about the camping trip.” Grace eyed me as I mopped the floor in her store. Jackson wanted to do a soft opening to celebrate because he was going to be on the road when her antique store really opened in a few weeks, so we were scurrying around trying to get everything in order. Jackson also told me some secret plans for Grace and Izzy, but he wouldn’t elaborate. All I knew was that we needed to stay at the store today until he swung by.
Which was a great distraction because when we’d gotten home from the camping trip, I saw two pieces of mail stuffed in the letterbox next to the door. I assumed they were for Cash, but then I saw my name.
In Rob’s handwriting.
The first one read,
I hope you’re enjoying your lakeside vacation.
The second one read,
I hope he’s not charging you full price since you’re sleeping with him.
I scanned and emailed them to my attorneys, but since there were no outright threats, there was nothing law enforcement could do. And I was determined not to let him take away the remaining joys while I was here at the lake. I didn’t tell my family or Cash, and I wouldn’t.
Rob was just full of it, and I knew it. He was just trying to get a response from me, but I refused to give him one.
So, this time with my sister was really needed. Izzy was opening boxes in the back, so I had a little adult time with Grace, which was nice.
“It was amazing. Apart from his brother’s girlfriend falling into the buckthorn while they were trying to do it.”
Grace’s mouth dropped open. “It? Outside?”
I chuckled. “Believe it or not, people find all sorts of places to do the deed.”
“Anyway, she wanted me to help pull her out of the predicament, so lucky me got to see all of her lady bits. Normally, I wouldn’t mind helping, but she wasn’t the most pleasant human being on the planet. Anyway, they went back early.”
“Oh, so you two had a lot of alone time?” She waggled her brows.
“We did.” I licked my lips and thought about sharing my concerns with Grace.
“Listen, I know you’re rooting for Cash and me on some level. I get the book selection. I know there’ve been a couple of setups.”
“Never.”
My brows rose. “Someone purposefully plugged my tub drain so that Cash had to come over.”
Grace bent over and dusted.
“But I’m worried that once I go back to my life, things will fall apart, and I’ll leave Cash more wounded than he already was before.”
Grace spun around with a hand on her hip. “Why would you think that?”
“Which part?”
“That it’s not going to work out?” She frowned, looking at me like I had four heads.
