“I guess so.”

“What’s weird, though, is that I had checked the tub before you arrived, and it drained fine.”

“Well, thanks for helping.” My mind drifted to my sister yesterday. She’d gone upstairs and claimed she needed to rest for a little bit, but...

I pushed the thought out of my mind. That would be crazy with a capital C. She wouldn’t stuff something down the drain.

Would she?

Nah.

Although Carter Locke also went upstairs after my sister, it wasn’t like it was easy for a guy in his nineties with a walker to navigate the stairs.

But he did.

I bit my bottom lip and realized I’d suddenly swallowed the delusion pill.

“You think our get-together got a little rowdy, and the guests started stuffing drains?” I teased.

Cash’s laugh roared to life as he shook his head. “It’s your family. You tell me.”

“Speaking of, after the ice cream, would you mind dropping me off at my sister’s store?”

Cash smiled. “Not at all.”

“Thanks. She was going to come by and pick me up, but this would save a trip.”

“Sure thing.”

I grabbed my purse and smiled at Cash, realizing that I’d completely forgotten about my ex’s nasty call.

“Distraction is a good thing,” I hummed.

“It can be.” He winked at me, and a little flutter of excitement tried to rev up, but I quickly stomped it. “And you are quite the distraction.”

I rolled my eyes as we walked out of the kitchen, and he picked up his toolbox by the front door. “You’re not nearly as cranky as you were yesterday.”

“Give me time. I’ll go back to my ways.”

“I don’t know. I think it just might be my joyful spirit that spits snot everywhere and talks about her ex that got you out of your funk.” I grinned.

“I’m not in a funk.” He frowned. “But maybe it’s you talking about yourself in the third person?”

I snorted. “Yeah?”

“Just because I don’t look like a clown all the time, grinning ear to ear, doesn’t mean I’m in a funk.” He glanced down at my sandals and smiled for some reason.

“If you’re going to use a clown analogy, I’d say you’re morePennywise, if anything,” I muttered under my breath.

“I heard that, and thank you. And is your toe okay? It looks like it's triple the size of most toes.”

I rolled my eyes. “Wasn’t meant to be a compliment, and my toe is fine. I’d thank you for unclogging my pipes, but I wouldn’t want you to think I’m going to be your next stalker throwing innuendos your way.”

Cash’s low, grumbly laughter filled the foyer as he opened the door for me, and I wasn’t sure if getting ice cream was a good idea, after all.

“Maya, something tells me I couldn’t pay you to stalk me, so I’m sure I’m safe.” I walked under his arm as he held the door. “Like you told your sister, what I have to offer is next-level, and you aren’t ready for that.”
