“Sorry?” I asked. Surprise registered over my face. “Never apologize for kissing me.”

I shifted in my seat, attempting to wrangle my erection so she wouldn’t see it.

Her gaze dropped to my crotch.

Too late.

A smile touched her lips.

“Well, that’s an interesting development,” she teased, bringing her gaze back to mine.

Damn it. I should never have taken the top off this Jeep. What I would do to her if I could in the backseat.

“Maya, it’s pretty difficult to stay calm when you’re around,” I confessed. “And I know I need to be better at it. You’re going through a lot, and I need to do better at respecting—”

Her mouth came back to mine instantly as she slid her hand up my jaw while drawing the other behind my neck.

This was like a fantasy come true. Maya’s mouth covered mine, her lips parted, and the kiss intensified ten times over from the last.

A low, muffled growl tangled with our kiss, but I couldn’t help it. She was intoxicating. I needed her. I wanted her, all of her.

My hand moved along her side as her body trembled from my touch. She let out a soft hum and, again, pulled away.

Which was good.

We were in the middle of Buttercup Lake in a Jeep with no top.

This could only go so far.

Right?

I opened my eyes to see her studying me, her lips pinkened and swollen from our kisses.

“You’re a complicated guy, Cash.” She smiled and nodded. “I think it’s time we grab some breakfast.”

I laughed, adjusting myself when she got out of the Jeep. “Whatever you say, Maya. You seem to be full of good ideas this morning.”

Chapter Thirteen

Maya

Okay, so I didn’t expect to lose control with Cash Knox.

Sure, the man was what sex dreams were made of, and I knew this because I took a class based on precisely that when I was obtaining my psychology degree.

But he took it to an entirely different level.

Just sitting across from him at breakfast made my panties nearly melt with his smoldering looks and brooding expressions. And believe it or not, what I seemed to be drawn to, even more, was the bit of grumpy that presented itself now and again. It was kind of like he was fighting the goodness of the world while trying desperately to embrace the bad. Except around Buttercup Lake, it was pretty hard to find the bad.

Unless you were like me and kept receiving calls from an attorney or an ex.

And the countless emails I received from employees based on everything that had transpired this morning.

But I’d made it a priority not to talk about me or my problems with Cash at breakfast. I just quickly answered the emails and went back to us. I didn’t want to seem like a Debbie Downer or look like the hot mess I knew I truly was. So, we kept to safe topics like the Buttercup Lake Lodge, which he promised to take me to, or the corn maze that was going to open up in about two weeks at Spring Lake Farms.

I’d mentioned to him that I’d planned on going to Buttercup Lake today to get some swimming and sunning in, and he quickly looked like a puppy dog ready for an invite.

So, here we were.
