I wiped away a stray tear that made its way to her chin. “I’d never think it.”

She let out a deep sigh and stuffed the tissue into her pocket. “Seeing you makes me feel better. I don’t know why.”

“Well, I’ve heard I’m modeled after a Greek god.” I tipped my chin up toward the sky and positioned my arms upward. “That would do it for anyone.”

Maya giggled. “That might be it. And you’re funny when you’re not busy being grumpy.”

I smiled. “So, what happened today? He already shut your office down. What else could he do?”

“It’s more what he hasn’t done today.”

“Which is?” I prompted.

“It’s been silent from him. His attorneys haven’t received anything back from him. He hasn’t acknowledged receipt of letters, emails, nothing.”

“Are you worried about him?”

She shook her head frantically. “No. Not at all. I’m worried the silence means he’s plotting something else.”

My brows furrowed. “Like what?”

“I have no idea. But he always thinks he’s above the law.”

I nodded, feeling the rawness of anger nipping at me. “And he doesn’t know you’re here in Wisconsin, right?”

“No. I never told him, and I’ve kept it under wraps. He does know my sister is here, but he also knows my other sister is in New Mexico. He might figure out that I want to be closer to relatives.”

I nodded. “I’ll let Nate know to be on the lookout. Do you have any photos of your ex?”

“Who’s Nate?”

“A police friend I have.”

Maya sniffled and nodded. “Okay. I can send it to you now.”

She pulled out her phone and scrolled through some photos and picked a couple to send to me. My phone buzzed, and I resisted the temptation to look at the photos immediately, even though my curiosity was killing me. This guy sounded like a complete dirtbag, and I couldn’t fathom how Maya wound up with him.

“And then, to make matters worse, I stubbed my bad toe again, and it’s even worse and dark purple.”

I looked down at her toe and hopped backward in shock.

“You need to get that thing looked at, Maya. It looks like it’s about to fall off.”

She snorted, and I bent down to get a better look. “I’ve done a lot of things to myself over the years with hammers and drills, but this looks worse than all of those accidents.”

“Thanks for that.” She snickered. “That’s why I called Grandma Millie to pick me up. There’s a clinic the next town over.”

I nodded and scratched my chin. With all of their plotting and planning, I was surprised that I didn’t somehow get the call to take Maya in for her appointment.

“Speaking of,” she said as the gravel crunched behind me.

I spun around to see Millie and Jackson in a car that came to a stop next to mine. Millie’s eyes lit up at the sight of me.

“Well, Cash,” Millie said as she stepped out of the car, “I didn’t expect you to be here.”

Maya’s brows scrunched, and she turned to me. “Actually, I didn’t even ask why you stopped by.”

I glanced at Millie, who was only a few feet away by now, and took a deep breath. “I’ll chat with you after your visit.”
