Cash walked into the family room with a huge bouquet of flowers and a bag. I couldn’t wipe the grin away when he bent down and swiped a kiss against my cheek.
“I think that’s my cue to leave,” Grace said softly. “Izzy will be over tomorrow after her shift ends.”
Cash looked at my boot and then at Grace. “I can take care of her.”
My mouth fell open, and a smirk rested on Grace’s features.
“She can be a handful,” Grace told him. “I’m not sure you’re up for it.”
Cash laughed and turned to the kitchen, setting the flowers and bag on the kitchen counter before wandering back into the family room.
“Think of it as a concierge service. Plus, I want to get you healed up enough to go on the camping trip with my brother and his...” He scratched his chin. “They aren’t in a serious relationship, so I don’t know what to call it.”
“Sounds familiar,” I teased as Grace leaned over and gave me a hug before taking my empty cheese curd container away.
“Just let me know if you need Izzy tomorrow.”
I snuck a look at Cash and noticed him noticing me when my phone rang.
Something changed in the room, and I froze.
Grace looked over at me as I looked at the screen, and my entire world sank to a new low.
“Do you want me to answer it?” Cash asked.
Chapter Sixteen
Cash
I stared at Nate. “You’re telling me there isn’t anything we can do?”
He shook his head. “We’ll keep an eye out, but within the law at this point, there is nothing that we can do. Our hands are tied.”
Nate had been with our town’s police department for as long as I could remember. He was a good guy, but he always saw things as right or wrong. No wiggle room, but life was full of zigzags.
“Her ex has been harassing her with texts. Now, it’s calls. He gets new phones. It’s escalating.”
“At this point, there isn’t anything I can do. If he shows up in town, that’s a different story.”
I scratched the back of my neck and let out a frustrated grunt. “Is there any way that we can find out where that cell is located or where he placed the call from?”
“You mean where the cell tower is located that it pinged to? Yes, but no. We need a warrant for that.”
I glanced at Maya, who looked like she wanted to do some real damage. Fiery determination rested behind her gaze whenever she looked in my direction.
“Keep in touch, Cash,” Nate said, nodding. “If anything changes, call me.”
“Will do. We appreciate your help.”
Nate gave a quick wave as he walked down the hall and shut the front door behind him.
“It’s going to be fine,” I promised her.
She pressed her lips into a thin line and nodded. “I know. I just can’t believe I dated a guy like this.”
“It happens,” I said.
Her brow arched. “Does it, though?”
