“I was actually thinking of you just now,” I admitted to her. “But I’m doing okay. Just got off the practice and I’m now on my way back to my apartment.”

“I knew it!” she cried triumphantly. “I could feel you thinking about me but this time, the feeling is stronger. It must be the crystals that are improving our connection. It’s amazing how your short exposure has amplified our bond!”

I grinned as I listened to her chatter on and on about her crystals. After Dad died, Mom had poured her heart and soul into raising Elle and me by herself, which was no mean feat. Fortunately, Dad left a substantial amount of money that enabled us to live comfortably and even fund my education, as well as Elle’s.

After all that she had done for my sister and me, I felt that it was only right that Mom turned her attentions towards her own happiness, too.

Whether it’s Reiki healing or crystals or veganism, as long as it makes her happy, then I’m happy for her.

“Speaking of crystals, something wonderful happened.”

I noted that her voice took on a more hushed kind of excitement. It had a breathy quality to it like she was so awed whatever it was.

“I met someone.”

I blinked at the phone for a moment. What? Did Mom just say…she met someone?

“I beg your pardon?”

“I said,” she clarified. “I met someone. A man. Agorgeousman who shares the same spiritual passion as I do. His name is Mike.”

Oh great. My mom has found a new man and I’m miserable over here in London. Fucking fantastic.

But sure, I was happy as long as she was! And judging from her enthusiasm, I could tell she truly was.

But I still missed Amanda so fucking much and, yeah, I was a bit jealous.

“It’s like magic!” she declared emphatically.

“Magic,” I teased her. “So…is he ‘Magic Mike’?”

“They look very similar!” she enthused. “Tall and sexy and a total dreamboat!”

I thought of Channing Tatum, the lead star of the movieMagic Mike—tall, muscled, with a closely shaved head, and masculine features... I imagined the Hollywood star, dressed in nothing but low-rise jeans and a neck tie, dancing sexily around my mom with crystals strewn at their feet and shuddered a little but the image was already imprinted in my brain.

If Mom’s Mike was anything like him, she really bagged the jackpot.

But love is blind and Mom sees people based on their “aura”,I reminded myself.Still, it’s good to hear her so happy about something. It’s been a long time since Dad died and it’s about time Mom chased after her own happiness.

I smiled as I listened to her talk aboutMagic Mikeand this intense “connection” that they shared. They had been dating for a week already and I could tell she was over the moon about it.

“It felt like my eyes were opened and I saw the true wonder of the world!” she told me. “Magic, I tell you, Oliver. It’s real!”

I knew what she meant with “magic”. For me, Amanda was magic too. With her, everything else took on a whole level of wonderful.

Simple pancakes felt like a gastronomical delight.

Sex with her wasn’t just sex—it waslovemaking.

All those little moments and big moments—they were all intense enough to be engraved into my damned soul.

“I would just like to know, though…” Mom stammered. “What do you think about Mike moving into the house? We older people have no time to waste when it’s up to such things. Actually, I’m asking for your blessings.”

“Isn’t the house already blessed enough by the numerous crystals?” I asked her mischievously.

“Yes, it is!” she agreed. “And when he came over, it all felt so harmonious. His energy really aligned with the spirit of our home!”

I had absolutely no idea what Mom was talking about but I decided to go with it.
