Leo
Naps were wasted on kids.I hadn’t crawled into bed in the middle of the afternoon for actual sleep since college. Now that I had, I planned to do it more often—especially if it meant curling up with my family.
Gunnar had drifted off the second his head hit the pillow, but he hadn’t released me. Whatever was going on in the little brain of his must have been bad. Even zonked out, he kept his hand on my arm as if he feared I’d leave.
I’m not going anywhere, buddy.
Dahlia whispered, “What happened to your jaw?”
I’d debated how to tell her about my run-in with Harrison since I’d left work and had come up blank. The truth was, I didn’t know how she’d react—and that cut me to the bone.
“Leo?”
Might as well tell her now. It’s not like she’ll yell and wake the little guy.
I stared into her gorgeous blue eyes. “Harrison sucker punched me.”
“What?” She jerked back as if I’d struck her.
Gunnar mumbled something in his sleep and curled closer to me.
Dahlia sighed. “We should talk in the living room.”
I motioned to the child holding my shirt as if it were a life preserver and shook my head.
Her frown deepened. “Did you hit him back?”
“Nope.” I didn’t care for the way she asked the question. It came way too close to her taking the douchebag’s side without hearing the story. “For the record, I was defending your honor.”
“What do you mean?” She rested her head on the pillow and stared.
I had no idea what was going on in that beautiful head of hers, but she seemed more intrigued than pissed off. “He came to my hotel and told me to stay away from you.”
She closed her eyes and sucked in a breath.
“I pointed out that you were an adult capable of making your own decisions.”
“He hit you for that?”
Running my hand over Gunnar’s back to remind her there was a small child present, I whispered, “I might have insinuated we had sex last night.”
Dahlia’s mouth fell open.
“I’m sorry. It was stupid, but the guy pissed me off.” I dropped my gaze to our son.
She laughed so softly, I thought I was imagining it. When I looked up, she flashed me a wide smile. “I wish I could have seen his face.”
“You didn’t miss anything. He’s had so much Botox nothing much moved, but I swear I saw steam coming out of his ears.”
She laughed again, this time burying her face in the pillow to muffle the sound.
“Your turn.” I reached over and ran my fingers through her long dark hair. “How did you handle things with Maggie and Shanna?”
“I came clean. They took one look at him and knew he was yours.” Her voice cracked. “Maggie’s taking it hard, but they both agreed to keep it to themselves for the time being.”
“We should break the news to my folks soon. Too many people know. It’s only a matter of time before someone slips.”
“You’re right, and I’m sick of lying.” Her expression softened. “But I should have a conversation with my dad before we go public.”
