“Something that won’t make my ass bigger than it already is.”

I frowned. “Will loves your round ass. He told me so.”

Miranda crossed her arm over her chest. “He’s lying.”

“No, he’s not. You know he would never lie to you.”

Her eyes softened and she smiled. “True. Well, I don’t like my rounder ass.”

“I bet you’d like it more if you twerked in the mirror wearing a G-string.” I gave her a little sample.

Miranda burst out laughing. I was already feeling better about Axel now that I was out of the loft and here with my adorable, pregnant sister-in-law. Whatever was going on with him had nothing to do with how he felt about me. Still, I was worried sick about him.

Miranda fanned her face, catching her breath. “Don’t make me laugh like that or I might pee my pants.” She blew out a few breaths. “You twerk pretty good. You’ll have to teach me when I’m not the size of a beached whale.”

“Corbin taught me how to twerk.”

“Oh my gosh, can you believe his ex-boyfriend was your stalker? When Will told me, my mind was blown.”

“Mine too.” I put my hand on Miranda’s belly again. Still no kick. Not even after Miranda jiggled Mia while laughing. “I’ll go raid your kitchen.”

“Okay, hon. I’ll be right here,” she said with amusement in her voice. As if I didn’t already know she lived in her most hated chair these days.

I hurried out of the room, making my way down the stairs.

“Simone! My water just broke!”

I twisted around at the sound of Miranda’s shrill voice, my heart jumping in my throat. Suddenly, my five-inch heel snapped, and my kneecap popped out of place. I screamed in pain and tumbled down the stairs.

Will

I left Miranda for only a few hours—just to help Axel—and chaos was amiss. Sean called, telling me to get home. I heard Miranda’s panicked voice bleeding through the Bluetooth in my car but couldn’t make out what she was saying. My heart had not stopped thundering in my chest since.

An ambulance was in my driveway when I pulled in behind Simone’s car. I bolted, running as fast as I could. Sean told me Miranda’s water had broken and Simone was unconscious for several minutes. If Axel knew she was hurt, he’d lose his shit.

I entered the front door. One EMT was with Simone, who was on a gurney wearing a neck brace. There was blood on the floor, presumably where she landed. My eyes cut to Miranda sitting on a chair doing the breathing technique she learned in the class we took. I was so torn—my wife or my sister?

“I’m fine, Will. Contractions are eight minutes apart. See your sister.”

Thank God my wife took the decision out of my hands. She was a saint. I stepped beside the EMT. “How is she?”

“Her leg might be broken, and she has a nasty gash on the back of her head. Probably concussed. We need to get her to the hospital. I’m not sure about internal bleeding.”

Simone’s eyes were open, but she had a glazed look. I took her hand in mine and kissed it. “Hey, can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Are you in pain?” I patted her hand.

“Where’s Axel?”

Oh shit. I should have known she would ask about him, but I couldn’t answer her truthfully. I promised Axel I wouldn’t tell Simone anything.

“Excuse me.” The EMT moved me out of the way and wheeled Simone out.

“Will?”

I turned toward Miranda. “Sean’s getting the car. We’ll follow the ambulance.”
