“He’s just a little boy,” I murmur before whimpering at the physical pain I’m feeling hearing the news. “What about the police? Have they been called yet?”

“Specks was calling them as we left to come get you, Kaya. He’s got every fucking computer booted up and going in his office right now trying to find y’all’s boy, I promise. He’s not going to leave a single stone unturned in his pursuit and truthfully, I’m kind of hoping the cops figure out who the perps are before Specks does because he’s promising a deadly retribution if he gets his hands on the person or persons who thought they could fuck with his family,” Poseidon confesses, before pulling me up into a brotherly hug.

I completely break down at his familial type of touch, sobbing into his chest and soaking his shirt and leather cut. I’m sure I’m probably snotting on it too, but can’t concern myself with something so trivial right now. “I need to go, I need to do something,” I frantically implore.

“We’re going to take you to the park because that’s where the police are going to be,” Poseidon tells me. As they lead me from the tattoo shop, Loki locking up before joining us in the SUV they brought to come tell me what was going on, I send up a little prayer to Foster to keep an eye on his boy until we find him.

CHAPTER

TWELVE

Noah

I’m scared right now,so scared that I’ll never see my mommy, my granny, or Mr. Specks again. I don’t know if Mr. Canyon was hurt, but I saw them hit Miss Chelsea in the head then watched her fall down against the sink, her eyes closed and blood flying everywhere. They ripped off my headset, but didn’t take my backpack. I think that’s a good thing because before I went to the bathroom, I put my tablet in the side pocket.

“Do you know how fucking heavy that kid is?” the mean man says to the woman who hit Miss Chelsea.

“Well, it’s not like he can walk right now. You saw the same show aired on the nightly news as I did, asshole,” she says in a mean voice. I shrink further down in the very back of the seat where they put me before covering me up with some stinky blankets so nobody could see me.

“Bet she got a fuckton of money when Foster died,” he yells. “Shoulda been ours, we coulda been on fucking Easy Street, for Christ’s sake.”

“He kinda looks like Foster did when he was a little guy, doesn’t he?” Her voice sounds different than it did before, kind of sad.

“Who the fuck cares? It’s not like we’re keeping him long-term. As soon as that bitch pays up, and gives us the money we're owed, we’re ditching his ass. Don’t really care when it comes down to it if he lives or dies.”

“Do you ever think it woulda been different if we hadn’t ignored her when she reached out to us?” the woman asks.

“I don’t concern myself with bullshit. The cunt’s the reason why our boy died. If he hadn’t gotten involved with her, he wouldn’t have taken such a dangerous job, and he’d still be alive and able to take care of us.That’swhat I think about.”

Why are they talking about my daddy? Do they mean Mommy when they say ‘she’? I’ve got so many questions but the first and only time I asked one, the mean man slapped me across my face and made my lip bleed.

As quiet as a mouse, I reach into my backpack, feeling around until I touch my tablet. Slowly, I pull it out, happy to see that it’sstill connected to the game Mr. Specks and I were playing. I turn my body so the light isn’t seen and find the little box Mr. Specks told me about so I can try to talk to him.

I hope he can help me. He’s going to be my daddy and that’s what they do, right? They help their kids. Taking a deep breath, I carefully start typing him a message. I can’t spell very good so I hope he knows what I mean since I don’t have my headset anymore and can’t just talk to him through the headpiece.

Noah : Mr. Specks?

Mr. Specks : Noah! Buddy, where are you? What happened? Can you tell me?

I worry my lip which makes it bleed again, but I can’t help it. I’m scared, so scared right now, and I’m pretty sure my mommy is too if she knows I’m gone.

Noah : Mr. Specks, I can’t spell too good.

Mr. Specks : That’s ok, Noah, you do the best you can, alright?

Noah : Ok. We went to the potty, but a lady came in and hit Miss Chelsee. She fell and had blud.

Mr. Specks : Do you know where Canyon is at?

Noah : He was out the dore while we went potty. I don’t no wer he is.

Mr. Specks: You’re doing good, Noah. How did they get you out?

Noah : A dore in the bak.

Mr. Specks : There was another door?

Noah : Yes.
