“What the fuck does that mean?”

“What are you hiding, Jig? Why would anybody implicate you in my dad’s murder?”

Jig flinches, looking over my head, and I smile grimly. Fucker.

“Yo, we’re losing daylight,” Cyn growls.

Jig stares at me silently until I walk away without looking back. He joins a minute after, and Bastion pulls back onto the highway.

Pulling out my phone, I send a text and lean my head against the seat. I’m tired and apparently a Castinetti. What next? Because I’m not sure I can handle anything more.

You’re a dickhead

Chapter Fourteen

Despite Cyn’s wish to make it to the cabin before nightfall, it’s pitch black when we arrive. So much so, I’m not aware we’re here until Cyn says, “Fuck.”

Bastion pulls to the side of the road before entering the trees. I grab the oh-shit handle as he powers through the terrain, unconcerned by any potential hazards.

About fifty feet from the road, he parks and shuts off the lights.

Beside me, Rain takes Cyn’s hand once more. He turns to her with his brows over his eyes and a painful twist of his lips. The sight makes my heart clench and I look away when she says softly, “It’s fine. We’re all together.”

“We can’t avoid this forever,” Bastion interjects from the front, and Cyn grunts before flinging the side door open so rapidly, the vehicle sways under his vehemence.

Rain grabs for him, but he’s too fast, and she sags against the seat when he growls at Bastion. “Fuck you.”

He slams the door behind him, and Rain bows her head, clenching her fingers in her lap. My spine crawls at Cyn’s force because if he’s worried, I should be fucking terrified. I suspect if I ask, though, I’m gonna get jack in return, which is why I exit my side instead and glance around.

It does nothing to allay my fears when I see that we’re in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but forest.

Great, this should be fun.

After a moment, Rain steps out beside me, her face pale, and points into the trees. “It’s through there. We have to walk.”

“What?” Wandering around in the fucking woods at night is like the worst possible scenario.

She shrugs and turns to me with furrowed brows. “The lights are out, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t here. Just watch out for holes.”

“Holes?” I ask, but she’s already heading around the vehicle toward Cyn.

Huh. I stare into the trees once more and suppress a shiver before reaching for my backpack. I’m not going anywhere without the damn gun. Especially not now, crazy fuckers.

Let’s check it out beforehand. Yeah, brilliant plan in the complete fucking darkness. Shit.

Beside me, the door opens and Bastion steps out. Jig rounds the hood, pulling up a flashlight, and when he sidles closer to me, I step away, ignoring his sigh.

Fuck off. Dick.

After a minute of listening to the heated whispers between Cyn and Rain on the other side of the SUV, they emerge. Cyn’s expression is forbidding as he looks between us before staring at me a little too long.

Raising my chin, I stare right back. Once again, I didn’t ask to be here. Back off, asshole.

“The girls are in the middle,” he finally says and Jig nods, taking the lead.

I follow with Rain behind me. Cyn and Bastion take the end.

I can’t see shit beyond the beam of Jig’s flashlight, and I stumble along like an idiot, sweat beading on my brow.
