“Can’t a guy just smile at a beautiful woman?”

“I see you haven’t lost your ego, then.”

“Nope, you just surprised me. That’s all.”

“Right.” She nodded her head like she didn’t believe me, but that was fine with me.

After the initial shock of seeing her again had passed, I felt a lot more like myself. Especially with her gorgeous body just out of reach.

Being the new doctor in town hadn’t left me much free time to date or hook up, so it was likely that the lust I felt for Jessica Flynn was an accumulation of blue balls and self-pleasuring.

Looking at her as those long lashes fluttered over her beautiful eyes, and her breasts—which had clearly gotten bigger—reached out toward me with her every breath, I knew this lust was not just sexual frustration. It was a deathly need for her specifically. One that obviously wouldn’t be met as she took a step further away from me.

The air around us was more awkward than before, and Jessica cleared her throat to draw my attention away from my dirty thoughts and back to the present moment.

“What about you, Grant? How have you been?”

Was she holding out an olive branch even reluctantly? Hell if I wasn’t going to take it.

“Surprisingly enough, I’m completing my residency soon and just moved from a hospital in New York.”

“Wow, fancy New York doctor. What prompted the move?”

Yeah, we aresonot going there.“Change of scenery.” I gave her my best charming smile, the one that dropped her panties for me years ago, and saw her fighting a smile of her own.

“Change of scenery? Really?” Jessica gave me a look that literally said she didn’t believe the bullshit that came out of my mouth.

Something prompted me to tell her everything, but really… she did not need to know that I had run away from my father.

“Are you waiting for someone?” She was looking over my shoulder again. Also to change the subject. No one needed to know my business, let alone the woman who hooked up with me one night then left me high and dry.

The panic in her eyes raised the suspicion in mine, and I couldn’t help but think she was trying to hide a boyfriend or husband from me. Shifting to the side, I cast a glance down the same hallway as a strange feeling settled in me. I brought my attention back to her and her fingers. No ring.

A silent exhale escaped me. It didn’t mean that she had no one in her life. Plus, I shouldn’t have been worrying about it either, but there was no stopping my need to find out who the jerk was.Fuck, she’s gotten under my skin already.

“Your husband? Boyfriend maybe?” I watched her closely for any reaction. All I saw was confusion.

It soon turned into a crazed look that had me feeling like I had just stepped into shit.

“It’s none of your business, but I don’t have a husband. I’m not waiting for anyone you should be concerned about.”

Ah, there was that fire.

There was nothing for me to say. The awkwardness came back with just the two of us standing there, staring at one another.

I searched for something—anything—to say, but when her eyes widened at whatever it was behind me, I knew I had lost her attention for good.

“Excuse me, Grant. I really have to go check on something,” Jessica mumbled, not even seeing me as she walked down the hallway.

My eyes caught sight of a colleague of mine further down, and I guessed that was who Jess was waiting for.

“Wait, Jess!” I called out to her.

Her eyes were guarded as she turned and faced me. “What is it, Grant? I really have to go.”

“I was just, uh, wondering if I could get your number?” There I was, back to being a fumbling idiot. Embarrassed, and somewhat disgusted with myself for being so, I waited patiently for her answer.

A second passed. Then another, until eventually, she gave me the briefest shake of her head and said, “It was good seeing you again, Grant, but it’ll be better for both of us if we don’t continue whatever this is.”
