Page 26 of Powerful Deception
“When?”
“One month from today. Eight in the morning.”
I look at the calendar that I have laying across my desk and nod. “I just need to find a babysitter and I will be there.”
The fucker has the audacity to let out a snort. “You still haven’t found a nanny?”
“Some of us aren’t as lucky as you.”
“Whatever you say. Are we good with this or not?” The king throws out.
I roll my eyes. Not like I have a choice. When the king calls, you run. “We’re good.”
The line goes dead as soon as I say the words and instead of going back to what I was doing, which was basically nothing, I dial Evelyn.
As the phone rings, I know that I’m going to regret the moment that she answers.
“Yes, Dante?” Evelyn says after the third ring. She is the only one besides my underboss, Lorenzo, that I’m completely fine with calling me by my given name.
“Hire her.” I say, no greeting, nothing. Just a command.
“Hire who?” Evelyn muses, as if she doesn’t know who exactly I’m talking about.
“Don’t play dumb, Evelyn. It doesn’t suit you. Hire the girl. You know which one. Make sure you find out every detail on her. Anything that her father didn’t tell us. I don’t need the shit that I do in my own house, to land on the front page of the Tribune.”
“Will do, sir.” she hangs up without another word.
Doesn’t anyone know who to be fucking polite anymore when it comes to ending a phone call?
As I place my phone back on the desk, I can’t help but hope that I didn’t make a stupid decision in telling Evelyn to hire Arianna Vitale to be my kids’ nanny.
And if I did and it comes back to bite me in the ass, I was thinking with my dick and not with logic.
But maybe it would be a good decision.
Maybe with her as my employee, I will find out why she was in my club in the first place with a fake name.
There’s a reason behind it because a woman like that doesn’t seek a job at my place of business just because they want to.
Especially when that woman’s father was just murdered, and my name has been listed as suspect number one.

Some people would say that the best time to visit Chicago is in October. It’s not too hot, still somewhat warm but the winter air is slowly coming in and people aren’t crowding the streets as much.
Some would also say that Chicago is the most beautiful city in the world.
Those people are wrong on both counts. Don’t get me wrong Chicago is a very beautiful city, but that beautifulness is clouded by the darkness that surrounds it. The darkness that plagues the city as the most dangerous in the country.
That little tidbit is always overlooked.
The people that visit the city daily, tend to not see the drug deals that are happening in every corner. Tend to not hear about the murders that are happening every night. Tend to ignore the sirens that ring out almost every single minute of every day.
Perceptions are clouded at the thought of exploring a new place, a new city culture. For tourists, the city is perfect but for those who have lived here for longer than half their lifetime, they know the real truth.
They know about what really happens on the streets and who not to get involved with.
They know not to cross someone that goes by the nickname the devil.
