Close.

“I know,” I wheezed.

I made it to the top, pausing for a moment to let myself relax.

Keep going before the other humans come for us. Your leader is not good.

I shook my head, but I still threw open the door and carried him out into the hall. I could hear the sound of thunder even over the crashing of the waves, and I stumbled forward as we were lurched side to side.

Why was I helping him?

I made a noise, almost a growl. I was still not comprehending how I had a fucking mythological creature piggy backing me, but…

If what Ethan had said was true— that they were going to sell him… I couldn’t let that happen.

The sound of his tail smacking the floor had me glancing back.

He was beautiful, in a very bizarre way.

We made it to the door that led to the deck and I pulled it open. The two of us were immediately thrown forward, sliding straight for the rail.

Even in the dark, I could see the massive outline of the wave coming for us. I felt my soul leave my body, just a little bit.

I was going to die. This was fucking it. There was no way I would survive that.

I’m going to bite you.

“What?” I asked, starting to turn.

He let out a little hiss and before I could shrug him off, I felt his fangs sink into my neck. I screamed out, but it was drowned by the sound of the ship completely tilting sideways, and the wave crashing straight for us.

Both of us slid, and he held on to me even as his teeth sank in harder. The pain turned into pleasure, and my body went limp.

We tumbled over the rail and plunged straight into the cold depths of the sea.

Delphin

My mate was going to kill me.

Not only had I just broken a pact that our kind had made long ago, but I had also brought the reason with me.

The human slumped in my arms, the taste of his blood filling my mouth.

I had just created a mating bond with him so that he would survive. So that his body would take oxygen like mine. I touched his neck, feeling the slits that formed where my bite was.

I pulled him down further from the choppy surface, away from the ship that was being dragged down into the depths. I was thankful for the feel of the water on my body, for the freedom this human had just given me.

He had saved me from the others.

“Delphin!”my mate snarled.

I swam faster, dragging my human with me. I swam away from my pod, and even away from my other mate.

“DELPHIN!” Aegaeon bellowed.

I clutched the human to me as one of Aegaeon’s sharks smacked into me, knocking us to the side. I let out a growl, but it was too late.

Aegaeon rushed in front of me, his face contorted with rage.
