“I’m not so sure.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Sloane

I hustled down the corridor towards the door with Jeremy trailing after me. The walls closed in around me and my vision narrowed. The icy wind slapped me in the face, forcing me back a step, my breath halting in my chest.

Jeremy pulled me to the side of the front door. “Breathe,” he whispered.

“Julia,” someone yelled. A group stood across the street with cameras and phones held up. My entire body tensed, and my heart jumped into my throat.

“This is going to hit the news, and I don’t have that PR company anymore.”

“Come on,” Jeremy said, grabbing my elbow and pulling me to a nearby black sedan with tinted windows and throwing open the door. He ushered me inside. I slouched into the seat, hiding in my coat like a turtle. The door closed, cocooning me in the leather seat, the street noise disappearing in the empty car.

Jeremy opened the driver’s side door and slid in beside me. The car roared to life, and he pulled away from the curb, leaving the spectators and their cameras behind. Night had fallen around us. While it felt like time inside the police station stood still, in fact, hours had passed.

“Do you think the DA will decide to bring charges?” I finally asked.

“It’s hard to say. But it seemed like they were more interested in Eden. She’s wanted for questioning on some unrelated incident.”

“I had no idea the guy was a cop or even holding onto her foot,” I said, sitting up. “We were genuinely scared.”

“I believe you,” Jeremy said, his dark eyes on the road. “Now, where do you live? I’ve been driving around to see if anyone’s following us. I don’t see anyone.”

Jeremy had me enter the address into the navigation app on his phone.

“Shall I pick up some food?” he offered. “You’ve got to be hungry.”

I was nowhere near hungry. “Sure,” I said. Everyone needs to eat, right? My head throbbed, and my body was drained of all energy. Yet, a current of unease ran just beneath the surface.

“Do you know what they want to question Eden about?” he asked.

“No,” I replied, pulling at the seatbelt. “I was honest when I said I let her live in my guest apartment because Lauren asked me to. We were helping a woman out. All I know is that she’s on the run from a man.”

“And that was all you needed, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Burger?”

“Sounds good.”

Once the aroma of the greasy fast food hit my nose, my stomach responded with a growl. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and my stomach remembered food. In the light from the drive through, I took in Jeremy’s profile. Was there any family resemblance between him and Jonah? Not that I noticed.

My first instinct was to call Jonah, but I couldn’t. It sent a pang through me. I’d broken it off. He’d shown up and stood up to my dad, and I sent him away again.

“Is one burger enough?” Jeremy asked, bringing me out of the rabbit hole.

“Uh, yes, thanks.”

“Fries?”

“Please.”

“Shake?”

“Chocolate. Why not? It’s been a day.”
