He was probably readying himself for something she knew he’d regret after the fact. Like stealing the business deal out from under Nick. He always lashed out when he was angry and took the revenge he thought he deserved. But when the time passed and he had a moment to breathe and reflect, he always regretted it.
Had he changed enough for her to feel safe being with him?
“Quinn.”
He’d turned to her while she’d been ruminating on whether she should stay or leave. The anguish in his eyes coupled with the way that suit fit him just brought her to her knees. He looked strong, sexy and so alone, that she couldn’t help walking over to him.
She just stood there trying to tell herself she wasn’t falling for him while knowing it was a big lie. There was no way she could resist Logan like this. She knew it, so why wasn’t she wanting to run for the ferry and go back to the mainland to get as far from him as she could?
She didn’t want to.
She liked her life; she wasn’t going to pretend she didn’t. But she wanted Logan. She craved the feelings that only he stirred in her. And he’d changed. She felt it all the way to her soul. He was a better man now.
And...
The biggest reason of all...
He needed her.
She saw it in his eyes and in his body when he reached one arm out to her. He needed her to come to him. And she did.
She didn’t question it or try to justify it.
This wasn’t a thinking thing.
This was a feeling thing.
This was a Logan thing.
This was a Quinn pretending it would be okay thing.
She nestled against his side, tipping her head to look up at his profile. He went back to staring out the window and she shifted her gaze to see what he was looking at. Then her breath caught in her throat.
August and Juliette stood in the hotel parking lot. From this distance, it was hard to see what was happening, but it looked like they were arguing.
“Oh, Logan.”
“It’s got to be about me. All her life she had the high ground in arguments with him. She’s always put the family first, always put her smile on and stood next to him regardless of what he’d done and now...me.”
“That’s between the two of them. No matter how it feels right now, she’ll still always put the family first,” Quinn said. “Come on. Come with me and dance and forget about this.”
“I can never forget this, Ace. This is who I am,” he said. “I don’t want to dance and smile. I’ll probably take a swing at Nick because without him we’d never be here.”
“I’m not sure that logic works,” Quinn pointed out gently.
“I don’t care. I know it makes no sense, but I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to know the truth or see it on everyone’s face. I want to go back to the way it was before this stupid wedding,” Logan said.
Quinn realized that he wasn’t going to be okay. She thought time would heal him, but this cut seemed too deep.
“Want to go to your room?” she asked.
“Can you come with me?” he asked. “Are you done working?”
“Yes,” she said.
He took her hand in his and led her down the hall to the bank of elevators. His parents entered through the side door as they approached. She slipped her hand under his arm and squeezed.
“Logan.”
