She glanced around the room then back at me. Everyone was watching—Val, Nonna, Mamma. But I only had eyes for Harper.

She cleared her throat, mirth dancing in her eyes. “Are you asking me?”

I rolled my eyes but smiled all the same. The only place Harper liked giving up control was in the bedroom. “Harper Allen, ti prego, will you marry me?” I batted my eyes, though this was no joking matter.

“Since you asked so nicely.” I could tell she was doing her best not to laugh. “Sì.” Oh, she was going to pay for this later. “Of course I’ll marry you, Enzo.”

I slid the ring onto her finger, the two diamonds sparkling in the light. A salt and pepper pear was set next to an Old Mine cut diamond. Dark contrasting with light. Shadow and sparkle. Just like us. One of a kind. Just like my uccellina.

Harper tugged on my hand, and I stood, smiling as everyone offered their congratulations.

She cupped my cheeks and pulled my mouth to hers. “Ti amo, tardigrade.”

I laughed, not even bothering to protest her nickname. “Ti amo, uccellina.” I kissed her back, putting my whole heart into it. She was my life. My world. And soon, she’d be my wife.
