Corbin smiles in triumph. “Let’s each pick one then and share. Same with our meals.”
“Drinks. What are we having?”
“I’m totally in the mood for beer. But I like wheat beer.”
“Go for the Lil Darlin then. It’s delicious.”
“Done,” I say.
“I’ll try the Tiny Bomb,” Corbin decides.
“Perfect choice. I love the Paradise Park if I’m wanting something lighter, which I do tonight because I want to add tomato juice for a red beer.”
“I knew I liked you,” I joke.
Our server arrives, setting down glasses of iced water on the table before taking our orders.
“We’re going to start with appetizers and drinks and we’ll order our meal later, that okay?”
“Planning to be here a while?” he jokes.
“Absolutely.”
“Good deal. We love it when pretty ladies fill the place up.” His smile is downright dangerous with his adorable dimples and bright white teeth. I have no doubt he does well with tips.
“Oh, boy. You’re about a decade too young for us,” I say, shooing him with a flick of my wrists.
He grins even wider. “Hey, can’t blame a guy for noticing a group of beautiful ladies. Age is only a number, right?”
“Oh, heavens,” Corbin mumbles.
“So what’ll it be tonight?”
We repeat our drink orders to him, order the tomatoes, fondue, and BBQ shrimp, and keep one of the menus so we can decide what we want to order later.
“I’m so excited,” I say, shimmying in my seat.
“Should we FaceTime Brock? Show him what his hard-earned cash is being used for?”
“I’m paying for this tonight,” I protest. “I don’t want to hear from either of you or Brock. I want to pay.”
Corbin raises an eyebrow. “He’s not going to like that.”
“He can get over it.”
“I feel like I need to see pictures of your families.”
“Well, mine is pretty small. Just me and my dad. Mom died when I was young but I had the best surrogate family ever.” I reach across the table and grab Corbin’s hand and give it a squeeze.
“Aww. That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me.” She fakes wiping a tear from under her eye.
I pull out my phone and scroll through some photos until I find the ones I’m looking for. I use my fingers to zoom in and point to everyone. “Here, I saved this one from Corbin’s Facebook page. It’s the entire family during spring break, I think. Corbin’s the oldest, then Cash, Boone, and Brock. That’s Cody, Boone’s little guy. Leah and Stone. Stone’s their stepdad but basically their dad. And this is Malina, Stone’s daughter from a previous marriage.”
“Okay. That does it. What’s in the water in Red Oak?”
Corbin laughs. “We’ve heard it a time or two.” Then she gasps. “Holy crap. I forgot to tell you the story from last night!”
“What story?”
