“Why won’t you let me inside, Naomi? Brock’s in there, isn’t he? You’ve been whoring around with him our entire marriage so I’m not surprised.”

“You really think that little of me?”

“She never stopped panting after him,” he mumbles to himself. “Tried everything to make her love me but she wouldn’t.” When he looks back at me, I see nothing but anger in his eyes. “I knew you were with him. All the time. Whenever you were out with Corbin, I knew the truth. You were busy screwing Brock. Don’t lie to me. I know it’s the truth!”

I don’t know how to get through to him when he’s in this state so rather than respond to his crazy talk, I tell him simply, “If you’re not out of here in two minutes, I’m calling the police.”

I slam the entry door and quickly lock it before moving through my house to where I stupidly left my phone.

Me:I’m running a few minutes behind but I’ll be there soon!

Leah:No worries. I just sat down. Want me to order for us?

Me:I won’t be long. Maybe just order me a sweet tea?

Leah:You got it. See you soon. No rush, I have my book with me.

I hope it’s soon. How is this my life?

I tiptoe back to the front door and see that Wyatt is still on the porch. Still pacing like a caged animal. Still looking unstable.

Chewing on my lower lip, I try to think.

Do I want to actually call the police? No.

Will I look like I’m not serious about him leaving if I don’t? Yes.

Ugh. Damn it, Wyatt. Why is he doing this? When he signed the papers, everything seemed fine between us. Sure, he argued a little before signing but it appeared like he accepted it. Now, though, he’s made a complete one-eighty.

I take a deep breath and dial 9-1-1. Something I never thought I’d do.

“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”

“My ex-husband Wyatt showed up here about fifteen minutes ago and refuses to leave. He appears agitated and is pacing on the porch. I’ve asked him to leave twice and he won’t.”

“Okay, ma’am. What’s your name?”

“Naomi.”

“Hello, Naomi. Can you give me your address and a call back number in case we are cut off?”

I recite the information to her quickly.

“Naomi, you said your ex-husband won’t leave your home. Is he inside?”

“No. I wouldn’t let him in, which made him even angrier.”

“Do you feel as though you’re in danger?”

“Not when he first showed up, but I do now,” I admit quietly. “It… it um, seems like he’s on something. I don’t know what but he’s acting quite bizarre. He’s pacing outside and telling me he needs in.”

Just then he starts banging on the door again, shouting to be let inside. That he needs his stuff and can’t open the door.

“Are all entries into your home locked up, Naomi?”

“Yes, they are, but he’s banging and yelling at the door again.”

“I have a patrol car on the way. I’ll stay on the line with you until they arrive.”
