“Are you excited for the festival?”

I grin. “Always. Three days of eating and playing games? And having a few drinks, too? There’s nothing better.”

“Agree. Malina’s coming to town, too!”

“Oh, yay!” I cheer. “I haven’t seen her in ages.”

She nods, wiping her mouth after taking a bite of her sandwich. “I know. It’s been a while since she’s been able to come to Red Oak. Work is busy for her.”

“She’s doing well, though?”

“She is. I wish she’d take time to relax a little, though.”

“While she’s here for the festival, hopefully she’ll do just that.”

Leah holds up two fingers and criss-crosses them together.

Our waitress stops over to refill our drinks and once she’s gone I ask Leah, “Have you seen her here before?”

She shakes her head. “No, I haven’t.”

“I wonder if that’s Dorothy’s great-niece. The other night Brock and I were here for pie and she mentioned her.”

Leah’s eyes light up. “You were here for pie?”

I roll my eyes. “Yes, as I’m sure you’ve already heard from someone in the family.”

“Well, it’s nice to hear it from you, too. How did the pie date come about?”

“Like you don’t know.”

She shrugs a shoulder and leans back. “Humor me.”

“I went over to his place and Cody stopped by so we walked him home then decided to keep walking. Ended up here. Talked with Dorothy as we ate some pie. Walked back to his place then I went home.”

“That’s a boring version. I was hoping for something a little more scandalous than that.”

“Leah!” I exclaim.

“Oh, don’t play dumb with me. You know as well as I do that there’s something more between you two. It’s just finally your time.”

I’m positive my cheeks are flaming as red as the top I’m wearing.

“I see that blush on your face. You’ve held my son’s heart for years, and I think you’re finally realizing that he’s held yours, too.”

ChapterThirteen

Naomi

Leah starts laughing at the expression on my face but luckily our waitress brings our check, giving me a good excuse to ignore the fact that she’s waiting for a response from me.

“How was everything?”

“Great. Like always,” Leah replies.

“Glad to hear it.” She smiles.

We make a quick pit stop to use the restroom then decide to head over to the hardware store to talk to Dale before going to the police station.
