“Yup. What do you want to start with? Should we go down the list.”

“Sure. Okay. First is something to drink.”

“I need to explain a few things from me first.”

That makes me a little uneasy. Did he not know what to buy?

“Okay?”

“Well, we’ve known each other for a long time, so I went about it differently. I got stuff I remember from when we were younger and stuff I think you’d like now. I also spent a little over because staying at fifty was a lot harder than I thought it would be.”

My jaw drops. “I did the exact same thing!”

“Seriously?”

I nod and he crushes his lips to mine.

This crush I have on Brock is turning serious real fast and it makes me both excited and nervous. It shouldn’t happen this quickly, right? Sure, we’ve known each other our entire lives but still… my feelings for him have grown at such a rapid pace that it’s kind of scary.

He holds my gaze for a few moments before sitting back in his seat, running a hand through his now-wet hair and looks out the windshield. I wonder if he’s thinking the same thing I am. That whatever this is between us is moving at warp speed.

“Something to drink,” he says, rather than asks, his voice a little hoarse.

I pull out the Gatorade and beer, explain why I bought them and he pulls out a small bottle of my favorite grape-cranberry juice and, no surprise, a bottle of wine.

“Ooh, I love this wine! And the juice, too! Good memory!”

“I still drink this same Gatorade, you know.”

“With the same lid?”

He grins a boyish grin. “It tastes better this way.”

With a roll of my eyes, I reach in to grab the food. “Doritos and almonds. The snacks of champions.”

“Yes! Perfect. These smoked almonds are the bomb, I’m telling you.”

I laugh at his excitement then screech my happiness when he pulls out a bag of Reese’s peanut butter cups and a bag of buffalo flavored pretzel thins. “Yay! Have you had this flavor? Oh my gosh, they’re amazing. And so addictive!”

“Glad you like ‘em.”

“Like ‘em? Ilovethem. Thank you!”

“You’re welcome. Okay, what’d you find to play with?”

The way he says play makes me think of dirty thoughts instantly but I push them aside for later. “Cards because I used to beat you at blackjack all the time.”

“You did not!”

“Agree to disagree. And a new soccer ball so you and Cody could play.”

“So this part is a gift for Cody? Because you know he’ll try to steal these cards, too.”

“Nah. We’ll just tell him they’re both supposed to stay at your house.”

“Have you met Cody? He’ll sneak them out somehow.”

That makes me giggle. “What’d you get for me to play with?”
