“Yes,” she said. “I had a sleepover at Layne’s.”
I guess we were telling people now.
“Like Mom’s sleepover with Dad?” Zoey asked, and they might be young, but they knew exactly what was going on.
I glanced at Honor and nodded. “Yup. A lot like that.”
Riley and Zoey shared a twin look.
“Okay,” they said in unison.
* * *
Honor didn’t help muchin the kitchen, but the twins were nice to her, which I appreciated. I guess the pranks were over now.
Mark and Sadie reemerged when I was flipping toast in the pan and the twins were telling Honor about the comic they’d stayed up late last night reading.
She was doing her best to pay attention, but they kept talking over each other and it was a little confusing.
Still, Honor was doing her best and it was really sweet.
“I wish I could stay, but I have to go and open the shop,” Sadie said as I handed her a cup of coffee.
“And I need to take you to get your car,” Mark said.
“Yes, you do,” Sadie said, looking up at him with a smile.
There it was. That fire that they’d always had between them.
“You could just move back in,” Riley said.
Sadie almost choked on her coffee. “I think it’s a little too early for that, and we are going to need to sit down and talk as a family about how things are going to look going forward. Just because I stayed over doesn’t mean we’re getting back together.”
“We know,” the twins said.
“Okay. Then we need to get going. I’ll see you both tonight, my loves. Give me hugs.” She hugged both of the kids and Mark said he’d be back once he dropped Sadie off.
Then it was just me, and Honor, and Riley, and Zoey.
“I can’t live with myself if you end up just having that powdered smoothie thing,” I said, adding some food to a plate for Honor.
“You can eat with us,” Riley said, pointing at one of the empty chairs that pulled up to the kitchen island.
“Are you going to talk about anything gross or throw a fake bug into my food?” Honor asked.
“No,” they both said.
“We’re not doing that anymore. We’re much more mature,” Riley said, and I couldn’t look at Honor or else I would have burst out laughing.
“That’s good to hear,” she said, staring down at her plate, her shoulders shaking subtly.
She was absolutely laughing.
“How’s your French toast?” I asked loudly.
“Good,” they both said.
Honor finally looked up and she was smiling. I smiled back at her and then she winked.
