Page 8 of The Flame
Luther gazed into her eyes and almost instantly, the fire disappeared from his palms. He gazed down at his hands and was clearly surprised to see that they weren’t burned. They looked fine and felt okay. He looked up at Rissa and asked, “What the hell?”
She nodded at him. “You just received your power... the power of the flame.”
“You mean he can like, wield fire?” Swag asked, as he looked excited.
Nodding at him, she turned to look at Luther.
“But you said we wouldn’t get it until we needed it the most,” Luther reminded her.
“Then come, there must be a reason you got it just now. We have to figure out why.” Rissa urged them toward the door.
She led the way to another room and this room seemed solid but as soon as she waved her hand, the wall disappeared from view. This allowed them to see outside the mountain. She motioned the others outside and then said, “Do not worry, they cannot see us. All they will see is a solid mountain.”
They all stared at the clubhouse in the distance and the drama going on there. There were several wolves in the surrounding area and they seemed to be testing the bikers in the clubhouse.
Rissa studied the area below them and said, “As you can see, your friends are safe. And the Weres still cannot see the mountain at all.”
Luther nodded then looked down at his hands again. “Fire huh?”
“Well, that only makes sense, Prez. We are Lords of Fire,” Diesel told him.
“Your powers come from your inner strength,” Rissa reminded them. “There will be a learning curve until you master them but I have no doubt that you will all learn quickly.”
“Why aren’t my hands all burned up?” Luther asked as he looked confused.
“Your powers cannot hurt you but they can hurt anyone around you, so please be careful where you aim the fire,” Rissa warned him. She turned and studied the wolves at the clubhouse again. She frowned as she watched them.
“What do you see, Mother?” Winsome asked her.
Rissa shook her head. “I can sense something other than wolves in one of those men but I cannot see what that something is just yet. But I have seen one of them before. I recognize something inside his soul, I just can’t remember what it is. Or where I’ve seen it before.”
Winsome just stared at her mother. They shared a secret they couldn’t tell anyone else. Only Rissa’s council knew and they were loyal to her, so they would never tell either. Rissa looked over at Amira and shook her head. Her gift had been passed down to her daughter and now, it seemed her granddaughter as well. They would have to tell Amira one day but today wasn’t that day. Even now, they had more to do before they could sleep.
Just then, Luther’s hands began to burn again.
Rissa rushed over to him and told him, “Stop the flames.”
Luther tried but the flames refused to go out. He even shook his hands to put out the fire but the flames began to spread.
Rissa placed her hands around his face and looking into his eyes, she told him, “Clear your mind and let the fire die down.”
Luther tried but it didn’t work.
Then Amira stepped over and again cupped his face with her hands and looked him in the eyes as she whispered close, “Let the fire go.”
While the others behind her were stomping out the fires, he had started accidentally, Luther gazed into her eyes and let everything else go. The fire died down and finally went out, just as the other men in the room stamped the other flames down.
Diesel looked over at his president. “Brother, you’ve got to get a hold of the flames, man. Or all we’ll be doing is putting out the fires you start. What set this one off?”
Luther shook his head and seemed to come out of a trance he was in from gazing into Amira’s eyes. “I was looking at the clubhouse and saw one of the wolves rushing the door. The guys were shooting at him but he never even slowed down. It made me mad.”
“Bullets didn’t stop him?” Rissa asked sharply.
Luther shook his head as he stared at the clubhouse in the distance.
Everyone else turned to view it as well.
They did see the attack slow and then stop as the enemy all scattered back into the woods.
