“You just got back! Where the hell do you have to go already?” I shout at him. I don’t want to be left alone. Why does he keep leaving me alone in this creepy wooded cabin?

He groans, pointing to the pile of wood next to the front door. “I got wood, Lakyn, but I have things to do before it gets too late.”

“Can’t I come?” I cry out. My breaths come out as pants, and I feel winded as I reach him. He’s left me before. With the blink of an eye, he disappeared, fear clutches me that it’ll happen again if I look away long enough.”

He tilts his head to the side. “No, Lakyn. You can’t come. I need to get an update on how things are in town. Check in with a few people. Like I said earlier, if I have to focus on you, I won’t be able to protect either of us if shit goes down.”

I take a deep breath, wanting to fight him, but the anger emanating from him brings chills down my skin.

“I’m so mad at you,” I whisper. For so many reasons. The list is endless.

He smirks, leaning down, his lips pressing against mine. “You love me more. Now get the fuck back in the house,” he growls.

He releases me, and I take a step away from the tree, my tongue thick with words to lash at him, but I say none of them.

Instead, I head back toward the house, knowing this conversation isn’t over.

Whoever Braylin Carter is, I’m going to find her, and I’m going to kill her.

Chapter sIX

REIGN

Damn, she pisses me off.

But I can’t get enough of her.

The balls on her wanting to kill someone. She thinks she has it in her? She doesn’t, not in the slightest.

She wants to pretend because she was able to do it once that she has the ability to do it a second time, or a third.

She thinks she’s as demented as I am.

And the worst part is, I think she is.

The darkness which has seeped into her eyes is apparent. Her soul has darkened over the years, only further darkening once she met the masked man—me.

But I don’t think I made her this way. I think it’s how she’s been all along. It’s been hiding, lying dormant. And I’ve awoken it.

The real question is, do I allow her to fully open the gate into the darkness, or do I protect her from it?

She isn’t wrong, this girl from the video needs to die.

She’ll be pissed as fuck if I do it without her.

But I don’t know if she can handle killing without losing herself completely.

There’s this fine line of being able to take a life without becoming a monster. Still being a human and living among people normally without being a complete psychopath. I do it daily, no one would’ve ever assumed I was the masked man if Creed wouldn’t have been there when the door opened.

But he was, and I was revealed.

The death of Zane is stained across Lakyn’s face like red paint. It’s obvious she’s killed someone. It’s in the haunted look in her eyes. The way her soul has stepped into the shadows. She doesn’t have a scar, yet she appears to wear it like a badge of honor.

I fear if I give her the loaded gun, she’ll take down the world.

She could do it. Easily, she could do it. But how will it affect her? How will it change her?

I don’t know, but I know she’s not going to stop until she gets what she wants. That’s how Lakyn is, it’s how she’s always been.
