“I don’t want another bodyguard. You can stay.”
“Good because I wasn’t going to leave you anyway.”
She peered over her shoulder at me. “He’s so bossy.”
As I watched Valerie and Maddox come to terms with the situation, I realized that I hadn’t been as protective of my own woman. I hadn’t stayed by her side since arriving in Minnesota. She had to have been nervous, but I hadn’t paid attention, too consumed with myself and coming home.
Dodge had called it. I was an asshole, but not for long.
I’d fix things with my Bonita and not let her down again.
“Are you better?” I got to my feet.
“Yes. Are you going somewhere?”
“Yeah, but I’ll come back before you go to bed.” Maybe Brynne would be with me. Then again, Maddox had told my little sister she wouldn’t meet Brynne until tomorrow, so maybe not.
“Okay.” She climbed onto her bed and picked up her book. “I’m glad you’re home.”
“Me too. Don’t give Maddox too much trouble.” I winked.
“Why? He can take it.”
I laughed on my way out. He most certainly could. “I’ll be back later,” I told Maddox.
“I’ll be here.”
I knew he would be. Now off to find my Bonita and kiss some major ass.

Brynne
Sugar was the most gorgeous blonde I’d ever seen. True to her word, she’d been waiting for me in the small sitting area while I had cleaned myself up. Fresh clothes and a hot shower lifted my spirits and helped me to feel less insecure.
She had been talking openly about the ins and outs of the MC for the past twenty minutes. They were on lockdown until further notice because of Dorian. I felt responsible for disrupting and endangering everyone’s lives.
“I know what you’re thinking, and I want you to stop beating yourself up about it.”
I shifted on the sofa at her stern tone.
“None of this is your fault if that’s what you’re thinking.”
“But if—”
“But nothing. You’re more like your mother than just looking like her. She also takes the blame for things beyond her control. No matter how much I try to convince her something isn’t her fault, she carries guilt for it regardless.”
“It might sound weird, but I loved hearing how much I’m like her, even the not-so-good parts.”
Eve smiled, then turned serious. “Did she tell you about the kittens?”
“Yes, and I saw them with Joseph.” I steeled myself and spoke my mind. “I get they didn’t know about us, but he did and should’ve stopped them from kissing him.”
“You’re right. He should’ve. So what are you going to do about it?”
“What can I do? This is his home. His club. I’m nobody.”
“No, honey.” She made a tsk-tsk noise. “You’re absolutely wrong. You’re Brynne, Tina’s daughter and Track’s old lady. You deserve to be treated with respect. If you aren’t, you demand it. You gotta set your biker straight.”
