“Did you see her?” Jaynee asked. “Maddox is one hot twenty-year-old.” She whistled and I noticed Valerie scowl at her.

“Not yet, but they should be entering any second.” She patted my shoulder. “And here they are…”

“Oh my,” my mom said.

“Mercy, did she just walk off a magazine cover?” Jaynee gawked at the blonde bombshell like the rest of us. “She is gorgeous.”

I glanced at my sister, who didn’t appear happy. “Blondes are dumb.”

“Valerie, that’s not nice,” Our mom said sternly. “Sugar is blonde, and so are Snow, Libby, and Ava.”

Valerie rolled her eyes. Yikes. I wasn’t sure where her attitude was coming from. She was usually sweet.

“Heads are turning in the girl’s direction,” Maddy said. “I better go guard my man.” She snorted and waddled away.

“Oh dear, here comes Sugar,” my mom said.

“I have never met someone so rude and self-centered in all my life,” Sugar hissed. “How can he bring someone like that to a family party if she’s going to insult people? I swear I am going to wring his neck.”

Valerie grinned like the Cheshire cat.

“Who’d she insult?” Jaynee asked.

“Me!” Sugar hit her hand on her chest. “And what did Maddox do? Nothing. He just laughed and ogled her tits.”

“What’d she say,” I asked curiously. I hadn’t ever seen Sugar so fired up.

“That little witch told me she had pictured me older than I looked and it was gross that I would be with a much younger man. Can you believe the nerve of her?” Sugar blinked rapidly. “All this in front of Art.”

“Who’s coming this way,” Jaynee muttered.

“Eve, don’t listen to her, baby.” He wrapped his tatted arms around her waist. “You’re my one and only. Don’t let some here-today-gone-tomorrow chick ruffle your feathers.” He kissed her cheek, and she visibly melted against him.

“I don’t like her.”

“Me either,” Valerie said as she stared at Maddox and the blonde. “Want me to go spill punch on her white shirt. That’ll send her home crying.”

We all laughed.

“That’s not a bad idea, honey, but no. It would only make Maddox angry, and I don’t want that,” Sugar told her.

“I don’t care if he gets angry at me.” My sister shrugged. I suspected she might have a crush on her bodyguard.

“I need a drink.” Sugar turned in Art’s arms. “Lead the way, honey.”

Baby Zane started fussing.

“Oh, oh.” Jaynee smashed her hands against her chest. “The letdown when I hear him is like a waterfall. Make sure to get super absorbent nursing pads.” She scooped him up and stood. “Can you watch Sadie for me, please?”

“Absolutely.”

“Thanks, babe.”

“I’m going to go help calm Sugar.” Mom hurried toward the bar.

I eyed my sister, who was watching Maddox and his date. “What’s going on with you?”

She cut her dark eyes at me. “Nothing.”
