“Then do you think we are targets ourselves?” I say, remembering Eliza’s conversation earlier and Angelo nods. “Jasmine said the same thing and told me of the conversation the women shared when they left us. Eliza never knew the identity of the man who helped her but wondered if you were the man they wanted and set her in a trap for you.”
“Possibly.” I nod, considering the events that led me to her. “Perhaps they always knew of Frankie’s parentage and used him as the carrot on a stick. So, what’s your plan?”
“I’m guessing we have no choice.”
Angelo appears almost animated as he grins. “We wait for the Mafia King to come to us. Await his next move and if I’m right, I doubt it will be long.”
CHAPTER32
ELIZA
When I head to the kitchen, I find Louisa already there, deep in conversation with her husband Flynn. For a moment, I stand and stare because they make a striking couple. Despite scaring the panties off me, Flynn is a work of art. A stunning presence. A man who commands attention from his bleached blonde hair and contrasting dark stubble lining his jaw. The heavy silver rings he wears are impressive, being both menacing and yet beautiful at the same time.
I suppose that sums him up because he is possibly the most beautiful man I have ever seen and also the scariest. It’s not just the aura of menace he wears around him, it’s the madness and deep intensity in his eyes when he looks at you. It’s as if he’s studying your soul to use against you and yet, despite everything, I feel safe with him.
He is the first to notice me and nods, the interest in his eyes telling me he’s curious.
Louisa looks up and smiles, a blinding smile of friendship that I could sure use right now.
“Eliza, you made it at last.” She grins and gestures to the seat beside her.
“There’s still lots to eat and I’ll fetch you some fresh coffee. If you fancy something hot, I’ll arrange it with the chef.”
“Thanks.” I smile gratefully because quite frankly I could eat a racoon right now and as I slide into the seat beside her, I am strangely nervous as Flynn stares at me from his seat on her other side.
“Eliza.” He nods, a small smile ghosting across his lips.
“How are you today?”
“Less tired.” I laugh nervously. “I’m sorry I never made dinner. I don’t know what happened, but as soon as I put my head on the pillow, I was out for the count.”
“You had a heavy day.” Flynn sips his coffee and studies me deeply. I say studies because that’s exactly what he appears to be doing. Almost as if I’m a puzzle he has yet to work out.
“Where’s Malik?” He says it so softly I almost don’t hear him, and I roll my eyes. “Working. He told me he would be for most of the day and night.”
Louisa pours me some fresh coffee and sighs. “I’m sorry, Eliza, and on your first day, too.”
“He has a lot to work out.” I shrug, picking up the mug and wishing he was beside me now.
Louisa sits beside me and says sadly, “I guess. I mean, the priority is Frankie now. Knowing Malik, he won’t rest until he honors his agreement with Winter and Alessandro and brings him home.”
“Do you believe he can?” I’m so worried about that and Flynn nods with a determined glint in his eye.
“If anyone can find him, Malik can. There is nothing that man can’t discover when he puts his mind to it.”
I watch as he pulls Louisa’s face to his and kisses her so deeply, I blush and then tears himself away and winks at me. “Sorry to leave you, ladies, but I’m guessing you prefer it that way. I’m off to irritate a demon.”
He heads off and Louisa rolls her eyes. “He’s always so intense. I wouldn’t want him any other way, though.”
The dreamy expression in her eyes makes me smile and I’m curious about their life.
“Do you live here, Louisa?”
I’m interested in discovering more about her and she shakes her head. “No. We come here a lot, but we live in California mainly. Flynn is the Don of a family there and it keeps him busy.”
“What do you do?”
I’m keen to find out because I’m beginning to think I’m here merely for Malik to pick up and play with when the mood hits him.
