Greylyn quickly explained her demon radar going off and how Mrs. Smith developed the ability to change her eye color to blood red.

“I tried to make sure she didn’t suffer any injuries, but you know how exorcisms go.”

Kael sat back against the cushioned love seat. For several awkward minutes, silence ensued while a vein throbbed across the bridge of his nose. Biting his lower lip in contemplation, which riveted her attention, he began to explain.

“There’s a lot going on with this particular situation that you cannot possibly be aware of.”

Apparently.

“Hell, I don’t even know as much as I should.” Pausing, he added with emphasis, “But at no time have I attempted to hurt Kelly or her child, nor would I.”

Stunned, Greylyn nearly swung her arm to slap him for telling such lies. “What? Do you think I was reborn yesterday? Give me a break!” How was she to believe a dark guardian was not present to bring forth something evil?

“Please, let me finish. There are factions that have sought to kill off Kelly and Matthew’s potential lineage, and they have their reasons. I don’t know what they are. I don’t ask. There are others high up the power chain who have ordered that they not be touched. Period. Instead, they are to be protected at any cost. They wereveryadamant about it. Again, I do not know why. I don’t ask. They don’t tell.”

His expression, in addition to his words, sounded sincere, but demons were always good at lying. However, Greylyn was impeccably good at reading people’s true thoughts and intentions by the look in their eyes. It was one of her special gifts as a guardian angel. But then, perhaps she was not at the top of her game whenever Kael was around.

His warm eyes glimmered with his signature flecks of gold giving them a look akin to topaz. They held an expression of veritable disquiet, but also honesty. If he were human, she would swear he was being one hundred percent truthful. But the fact was…he was not human.

“Run that by me again. Someone in Hell has ordered that Kelly and her child not be touched, but others are looking to destroy them?”

He nodded. “Yep, that about covers it.”

“What about Kelly’s first miscarriage? I have it on good authority that evil played a significant part in that. Forgive me if I do not buy into the idea that the bad guys are actually the good guys in this scenario. I’ve been in this line of work way too long.”

She was not ready to believe Kael’s story yet, although it would explain a couple of things. There was a peculiar urge in her to believe him, though. Thinking back, he had never been a part of any schemes that harmed children or babies. Okay, minus the Boy Scouts in the Everglades incident, but the target had been the scout leader who had taken the boys out into the wilderness with nefarious ideas in his head. The swamp monster had done her a huge favor by eliminating him, but she still had to get the children back to safety before it or other dangerous critters – alligators, snakes – killed them. Perhaps she could question him about that incident later since he seemed to have some insight into that fiasco.

Right now, she needed full disclosure about why Kelly and the baby were under such a deliberate and vile attack and from whom exactly. Why was Hell itself interested in protecting anyone, especially a child? Seemed contrary to the nature of demons. Greylyn’s head spun with the possible ramifications. None were good.

A now familiar electric shock coursed through her veins as Kael placed his hand on top of hers. Maybe the touch was meant to be reassuring, but it was far from it. It only caused her heart to race more and her thoughts to blur. She felt his gaze on her, imploring her to look up into his face, but fear kept her head bowed.

I am not afraid of anything. What the hell, Grey?

Moments passed until he apparently decided he had been patient enough. With one hand, he cupped her chin and guided her face up until their eyes locked. Both sat unmoving. Finally, with a deep sigh and visible shake to break the connection between them, he commenced his story of how he became involved in the lives of Matthew and Kelly.

According to Kael, there were those in power in the underworld who were fascinated with a long-foretold story. “I don’t like to use the word prophecy because there is little indication that it’s true, but the phrase has been bantered around a lot lately. No one knows the story’s origins. Something about an ancient line of half humans/half angels, otherwise known as Nephilim.”

There was that word again … prophecy.

Greylyn had heard of Nephilim before, but had never come across one – the offspring of sons of God and human women. The Bible mentioned them briefly in Genesis, before Noah’s Ark:

“The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown.”

But what did that have to do with the here and now?

“I thought they had been eradicated long ago, killed off by both Heaven and Hell as abominations. With both sides against them, there’s no way their kind would’ve survived all this time.” She thought back to other religious texts outside of the Bible for mention of Nephilim. “According to Enoch, the real purpose of the flood was to kill them off.”

Kael nodded his agreement. “I believed so, too. Wasn’t until recently I learned that one line was preordained to survive for all time. Offspring from that particular descendant have played important roles in the continuous shifting in the balance of good versus evil from the very beginning. The Nephilim were known to be revered and holy men, but prone to temptation and falling into wickedness. But right now, I’d say evil is ahead of the game, so a survivor from this line would be ripe for Hell to mold into a force great enough to complete the conquering of mankind.” His college professor’s tone annoyed her.

She could not argue with that. Thomas’s theory about Hell wanting to lay claim to a powerful supernatural being was looking to be the most plausible. But instead of influencing a future guardian, this one could be much more powerful if he was a Nephilim.

“Recently, it came to light that a young woman in Virginia might be the descendant of this ancient pedigree of Nephilim. More importantly, she was the last of her lineage. There are no others. With outright control of her and any offspring, Hell would continue to reign supreme.”

At his words, prickles of tensions arose in her shoulders. That would definitely be a bad thing.

Greylyn countered, “But there’s an equal chance that she and her children will be more inclined to be servants for good.”

He nodded. “Agreed. Their mere existence would tip the scales back in favor of good. The effects could last for centuries, maybe even longer. Certainly would benefit mankind as Nephilim were considered to be superheroes in ancient times.”
