My vision blurred. “What were you putting to sleep a horse?”

Her smile faded in and out of focus for a second.

“Possibly. Have you seen the size of Devon? I needed to make sure one way, or another he mated me.”

Her words were fuel to my irritation setting the anger on an out-of-control race.

“You were going to drug him?”

She got a little closer, and I mustered enough saliva to spit on her. I was finding it hard to get a good swing in as the stupid meathead held me.

“You’re a slave. You don’t deserve him. Even your own pack sold you off. Now shut up while I work out a plan to take back control of my future. Be quiet would you?”

She tied something soft around my mouth, not that I could do more than drool at this moment.

“Grab her. We need to go before he comes back.”

This sucked. I was finally a part of a pack. Finally, part of a family and finally with someone who made me feel whole. For a few hours.

Then I remembered. I was a part of it all. I had a pack, and I had a mate. It took a few seconds longer to remember how to do it all, but then I did. He would hear me.

Devon? I need your help.

I tried to keep my mind focused even as my eyes closed without my permission.

Kiara? What’s wrong?

I wasn’t sure if they were moving fast. I couldn’t figure out how many seconds had passed. I could smell the woods again, so I did what I could with my last bit of thought.

Nessa. Woods. I’m sleepy.

* * *

“Shit, I can hear her breathing change. She’s coming too.”

Footsteps stomped through the brush with the grace of an elephant.

“Well, fucking hurry then. Where are we supposed to meet them?”

More stomping and as I tried to make out the fresh scents in the area, my wolf paced within me making my anxiety skyrocket.

At least she was there still, but something was wrong. I should realize she was more sensitive to things and with that so should I.

I pretended to still be asleep, although hearing their conversation I was certain they knew it wouldn’t be for long. Still, I needed a plan. Or I needed to know their plan.

“If we trade her and get the money we can run,” said the betas voice. I’d recognize his stupid voice anywhere. I’d never learned his name and never cared. I just knew he really liked whips and staring at Nessa. He was an idiot.

Sounded about right. Only an idiot would like her. But here I was stuck with the two stooges.

Devon? Please come find me.

It took a few seconds, but my brain caught up with the anxiety and kicked the rest of the drugs out clearing the fog.

We’re following. They didn’t cover their tracks well.

My wolf wanted to cry out. I had to fight her wanting to shift. My upper hand was that Nessa had no idea that I could shift. She had no idea that hadn’t been the reason I’d been traded. I wasn’t a broken wolf, not in the sense she thought. I always thought she knew, but maybe it didn’t matter. She was the reason I was locked up day in and day out. She’d hated me from the moment we’d met and now maybe I realized I threatened her.

“They’re up ahead, decide now Nessa.”
